We at the O'reilly engine machine shop ALWAYS use sealer on the freeze plugs when we install them! We remove them the way Kevin described by turning them sidways with a drift and them pulling them out . we use the brush top can of permatex aircraft sealer also refrenced earlier in this fourm. we have yet to have a complaint about a leaking plug!
