yes, the swedgeing SS would be nearly impossible with out some expensive equipment. Of all that i have ever changed both Chev/AMC and a few others i've never seen any sedged.

I'm surprised any of the plain steel Packard tubes ever ran over 500-600 miles without burning out.

I've decided not to tempt fate. I'm going to leave the exhaust heat riser in place.

The tube was 5/16 steel brake line. Where do you get stainless steel 5/16 tubing, especially only 8 inches?

One place would be Online Metals (link above). No minimum order, fast shipment. I've done lots of business with them.

A 12" length of 304 seamless stainless tube was $6.13. They have other types stainless, other metals (alloy steel was $12 something for same size), and other sizes--just need to figure what works.

Think the suggestion of checking vendors a good one. Maybe just photo but was the tube diameters same as regular tubing--nothing special? That might be something to consider in finding the right wall thickness.

Well now wait a minute. If Packard used a plain steel tube in production then i'm guessing that it must have been an extremely THICK WALLED TUBE inorder to hold up to the heat and corrosion. But then that would be difficult to swedge too.

Is there some other means to attach the carb choke tube to the manifold?????

What size is the INNER DIAMETER of the choke tube in your manifold??? Is it real small????

Anyone have a FACTORY ORIGINAL choke tube???

I'm not sure i like the following idea but give it some thot:

Maybe cut a piece of larger diameter SS tubing that the mild steel tubing will just pass thru. Place the SS shield inside of the manifold and then press the mild steel tube down thru it and then swedge the ends of the mild steel tube.

I couldn't tell you if it was factory original or not. It has a seam much like brake line; it is 5/16 OD (maybe slightly more) and is real thin. The hole in the manifold is slightly more than 5/16, more like 21/64.

I like the SS sleeve idea, but wouldn't the very top and very bottom part of the steel, which wouldn't be perfectly covered by the SS, be subject to the exhaust?

Wonder if necessary. After all, your regular lasted for 50 yrs or so but if the tubing were shaped to fit the space so a minimal bit of steel were exposed don't think it would be too bad. Is there enough room to have a larger diameter tube inserted thru a port and then turned or manipulated so the regular tube can be inserted thru it?

Yes, I think I can sneak the SS sleeve in; I'll do it, I'll order the larger SS and use steel brake line.
