Tom,

Could the last number is the casting date:

123 30PM X

12/3/30 in the afternoon shift?

Your serial number matches a 1931 319cid motor.

That is interesting, it corresponds to what Dave (Clipper47) was saying about the stamped number matching the casting number. I've never seen that in postwar engines.

So now the question is, do you have a 385 or a 320?

And on the PM, unless we see an "AM" sometime, I'm willing to bet it means "Packard Motors". The "X", well I've seen that on every straight eight I've ever seen. A lot of times they're angled, meaning not exactly squared and centered properly.

This isn't making sense. This would mean that Packard changed the casting number on these engines every time they cast one. I just don't believe they'd do that.

The casting date changed everyday. It just a sets of die blocks that are used when the disposable casting mold is made.
