Re: the small cotton covered wire in Packards1's distributor, he had a NOS distributor there on the bench, as new as any I have ever seen, I swapped the wire out of the NOS unit into the distributor in the car, it looked new-new and was in perfect condition. THe small white nylon "U" that holds the wire in place was still flexible enough on both units to come out without breaking, and go back in with no problems. HH56 and PackardV8 are correct, the flexibility of the wire is very important for anyone contemplating replacement. There are guys in Hemmings who rebuild distributors, the main service being the replacement of the worn bushings, a vitally important thing. I wonder what those guys are using? These days I think rebuilding the distributor, and replacement of those bushings should be part of every engine rebuild. It just doesn't make sense to make everything else in the engine right n' tight again then put a worn out old distributor back in. Talk about constantly variable dwell setting!

Re" Packard Tattoos--there was a guy in his 20s at the 1999 centenial meet, I talked to him during the Magnum Opus, he had the Packard crest tattoo on his shin, that was a first for me.

I used a nos wire from a new distributer I had put away years ago.
