I would recommend against the weld repair idea except if the existing ball was welded onto and turned down in a lathe.

I knew somebody who had that two piece setup and the ball broke off.

I assume he was driving along telling his passengers what a great car he had when the steering stopped responding. He ended up in somebody's front yard.

I thought it was funny because he was always rude to me.

If you can't find any then have the whole unit turned out by a machinist, then case hardened, although tool steel will probably last the life of the car.

Tim, I would agree with you especially since my welding is less than perfect. I'm having new ones made by a company that manufactures tie rods for a living. They will be case hardened and ground as original and have all the oil holes in the correct place. I did a bit of research and it turns out they will also fit 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th series cars and maybe more. Part numbers are 126145 for the tie rod and 132142 for the drag link. Let me know if you need a set, they are $400 for all four.

part # 126145 - is shown in my parts manual fitting 2nd-5th series as well.

part # 132145 listed as 3rd-5th.

My manual only goes through the 5th series.
