I am trying to locate a source for rear axle seals for a 1937 to 39 Twelve. The Original Packard part numbers are 196742 ( inner ) and 232676 ( outer ). Does anyone have a seal listing for these parts, or know of a source. I have a weep from the inner RH axle seal on my 38 Twelve, 1608. ( Bohman and Schwarz wheelchair accessible, reputed to have been originally owned by Lionel Barrymore) Any leads would be much appreciated. Peter Toet

Assume you mean availability somewhere other than the usual vendors.


According to the seal xref someone in the Stude club put together & posted 196742 crosses to a Victor 49197, C/R 18242 or National 450116

The 232676 crosses to Victor 49263, C/R 24931 and National 450374

If you can cross one of those old numbers to something modern I cannot verify the accuracy of the cross. The chart listed a front seal for my car and while the diameters were perfect it was too thick and would not seat deep enough to clear the backing plate.

EDIT: The 55 book would seem to agree on the National number if you drop the 4 off the number on the Stude list.

The book I have, copyright 1955, shows,
Packard 196742. National number 50116
Packard 232676 National number 50374
