What is the correct (or minimum) size fuel line from the tank to fuel pump for a 56 pat.

Original is 5/16".

If I were going to replace it, go to 3/8", but that's just my preference. 5/16" is sufficient since almost no one is drag racing these cars any more or even running them full throttle for a bit.

However, an electric "pulse" pusher pump is a good idea to 1) prevent vapor lock when hot and 2) full an empty carb after it has sat for a while and the modern gas evaporates.

Hi,
On the same subject does anyone have a part number maybe NAPA or where a replacement can be obtained for the filter element inside the glass bowl fuel filter at the inlet of the carb. Mine is a 55 400 and from pictures of other 55 engine bays it looks to be original.

5/16 should be ample. The only car I know that came with a 3/8 fuel line was the Chrysler race hemi in the late 60s. Even their hi perf 440 came with 5/16.

Original line was probably reg. steel,NOT SS, correct?

<p>Gen-2 (1970-81) Firebirds all had 3/8 lines. However, part of that may have been due to the fuel-return (1/4in) lines used on the emission-control vehicles starting in the early 70s which required more raw fuel flow given the return line bleed off.

They are 2 different things. I was talking about cars with carburetors. Later model fuel injection cars have a completely different setup.

5/16 fuel lines are pretty well standard equipment on American cars from before fuel injection. In the interest of clarity I left it at that.
