The Fuller-Col Motor Co. was the local Packard dealer located at 361 South First St. in San Jose CA. A few years after this photo was taken in the late 1920's they built a brand new building on Alameda in San Jose. |

8x10 black and white photograph of first Packard. Inscribed on photo back; driven on campus of Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. after car was shipped there in autumn of a 1930 for permanent exhibition in lobby of the James Ward Packard Laboratory of Electrical & Mechanical Engineering. Car is 1-cylinder, 9-horsepower, 71.5-inch wheelbase, 2-person roadster completed Nov. 6, 1899. Body by Morgan & Williams, Warren, Ohio. The restored car has a solid engine compartment door (original had louvers) and is missing original fittings such as side lamps, lamp attached to center of front cross springs, and dos-a-dos seat mounted on rear deck. The Quickel Building (at the SW corner of 6th St. & Central Ave.) and its parking garage (at the NW corner of 6th St. & Gold Ave.) were constructed in the 1920s as a Studebaker dealership (according to this article). In 1954 Studebaker was acquired by the Packard Motor Car Company, whose logo still graces the back of the parking structure. The Quickel Building was a three-story office building and had some tenants even after Packard left the building. Photo caption on back from Packard News Service: Price leader of the 1951 Packard line is the 200 3-passenger business coupe, this model, offering space in the fullest proportion to the need of motorists for whom such a car holds specific appeal, is powered by a 135-horsepower straight eight engine which, test charts reveal, gives greater gasoline economy, in addition to more than 30 cubic feet of trunk space, the new Packard 200 business coupe, with a 122-inch wheelbase, has an additional 31.25 cubic feet of storage available immediately behind the front seat, sturdy paneling forms the back and sides of this storage space while the floor mat is of durable black rubber.
