The "star washer" type item is to prevent valve assembly rotation. It may not be missing, oft times they remain stuck in place.

1940 Super 8 Valve Work

Attaching a couple photos, one showing a sample valve and what it looks like coming out of car that is in occasional use, and current gasoline. I had quite a time getting one exhaust valve out, really gummed up. Other picture is of some sort of lock washer that seems to go between the top of the valve spring and the block. One is missing on one spring. Is this a necessary part? If yes who sells them?, don't see on Max Merritt site? Only have the valves out of the first three cylinders so far.

If you twist the mirrors relative to the mounting arm you should be able to find a position where they can be rotated towards or away from the body tol give you a good view to the rear.

The passenger side is more difficult.

Craig the Clipper Man
I recently bought a 1947 Custom Super Clipper and purchased a pair of the gooseneck side mirrors that I see in these posts. I had no trouble installing them; however, the position of the mirrors is positioned at a 90% angle to the door. The mirror itself can only rotate so far so all I can see out of them is the asphalt. The passenger side mirror is barely visible at all. As far as I can "see," these proper rear view mirrors look great but are utterly useless.

Can anyone out there give me information about how I might adjust these mirrors so that they can actually be used as intended? I really like the style of these mirrors, but I really would like them to work for safety.

You can make a lot of really neat things from the parts left over after you rebuild your engine ...

Thanks. The dimensions on their website match what's in the Packard specs book, except depth is not listed. I asked them for clarification.

'55 400. Needs aesthetic parts put back on, and electrical system sorted.
'55 Clipper Deluxe. Engine is stuck-ish.

If you're not replacing the pistons, be sure that Egge's rings with fit the stock ones. Otherwise you'll have to find NOS.

Ok so the current plan is:

- install valve guides as necessary
- hone the cylinders and install new piston rings from Egge
- install a new seals kit from MM
- oil pump modifications TBD

When my Plastigage gets in I'll check some of the bearings, but for now they appear good.

Thoughts appreciated.

Olson's Gaskets should have them for a better price than from one of the Packard parts dealers. They are fast, friendly and family owned so I get most of my gaskets from them. They can also make custom gaskets from a good sample or even from an outline.

Thanks guys. Very happy with how it's coming together. I have just a few more small things to do on the interior, then I can call it done. The interior is essentially new from front to back. The only thing that I haven't redone is the carpet. The owner before had it replaced and it was good enough for me.

Looking ahead at the weather to see if I can get it back on the road this week. Should be able to tomorrow or Thursday. I spent some time yesterday going through things to prep it for awakening....checked fluids, topped off power steering since most of it is now in the drip pan, air up tires, top off battery charge, etc. I'll need to go through the process to get the transmission topped off, since much of that is also in the drip pan.
