Re: Locked rear differential

Hi,

I got myself a bottle of positraction additive. I removed some of the fluid from the diff and peaked in the fill hole. I noticed a bolt sticking out, which didn't look normal. Instead of putting in additive, I decided to drain the fluids and open the back cover with the rear axle still attached to the car. Just to see if there was something obviously wrong.

I can conclude that I have the twin traction safety differential, as shown in SC Vol 30 #4. However, it seems to be in kind of rough shape, since none of the bolts are attached.

Looks like I need to pull things out in order to see what can be salvaged.

John

ps. My brother is flying to visit in a week and a half, so I am able to order a suitcase of parts if needed for him to bring over.

……. by the way, this is the guy who lets us live upstairs in his house for he last 13 years!
His Name is Max and he's a purebred wire-haired dachshund... but all these years he said his father was a Doberman and his mother a German Shepard and that's how he always behaved, which got him some trouble with his peers over the years.
What ever ….. it looks like, …. he likes his new Sport Phaeton.

G'day Cruiser,
to PackardInfo.

See the comment prior to your post which says "The OP probably did not enable notifications (they are disabled by default on new threads) so maybe you can reach them by PM."

However which way this works out. I invite you to include this Packard, or any other Packards you should acquire, in PackardInfo's Packard Vehicle Registry.

Thanks, TXGoat….I can confirm that the four bolts to the block should all be at about 7/8 inch. That’s what a I was coming up with as well. Who knows why, but one of my bolts is a 1/4 inch too long. Might have been a source for the mysterious coolant link.. Ya- think?

I appreciate the help. Looks like another trip to the hardware store for a shorter bolt. I”ll likely just replace them all.

Try a very thin putty knife/scraper or better still two or more. Hammer them in gently, gently. Keep at it a little at a time. Rocker cover might have been re-installed using a liquid gasket which is now resisting your removal efforts.

Usually with a quick visual inspection, you can see if the differential seal is in place
