Re: Voltage Regulator

Thanks, great information. OK, do have correct regulator VRP-4003A and generator GEA-4802-A and they are wired as per your posted wiring diagram. Will be unable to run test until later this coming week as I am rebuilding leaking full pump and parts will not be here then. If I understand correctly, the grounding and un-grounding of the field at the regulator is what determines if the amperage is sent to the battery or directly to ground? Looking at the wiring diagram of this 1940 model 1806 noticed that the battery charges through the amp meter and depending on the charge level of the battery more or less current flow shows on the amp meter. What I don't quite get is the load which doesn't go through the starter input terminal, like the battery, takes off from the input terminal of the amp meter, how does this load (head lights etc) show as amperage flow across the amp meter?

Thanks, just purchased this 1940 180 Packard and am going through it to make it road worthy. Noticed amp meter always showing fully charging. New battery and cables installed prior to purchase! F terminal is grounded to generator frame according to ohm meter. Also grounded to regulator base.

Have 1940 with 356 engine. Amp gauge always shows full charging even when battery has been on charger and shows 100% charged. Concerned about over charging and ruining this new battery. Reading Packard owners manual it talks about adjustment to cutout relay in voltage regulator, anyone with experience on this?

Just to let everyone know, problem solved. Diaphragm in fuel pump was weak and was also sucking in air which was was keeping fuel level in the carburetor low. This resulted in low fuel volumn being pumped by accelerator pump.

Rebuilt Stromberg AAV-26 model 40-10D 1940 356 engine.
Thanks for the info on spacer block, found one and replaced. Completely cleaned and rebuilt carburetor with kit from Kanter. Runs much better know with the exception of major hesitation on acceleration from stop. Accelerator pump working well lots of gas, idle speed up so must be a problem with rebuild. Hard to tell which parts are correct as kit has pieces for many models, the one I have is a Stromberg AAV-26 40-10D. As carburetor worked poorly when I purchased recently may not have been properly rebuilt by previous owner. The problem appears to been in the accelerator pump or power pump section. Does anyone have know the correct rebuild parts for these?

Currently rebuilding subject carburetor on my 1940-180. I noticed an approximately 1/4" thick spacer between the carburetor base and the intake manifold. This spacer, which I assume is to protect the fuel in the carburetor from over heating, is badly gouged. Have rebuilt many carburetors in the past but never come across this spacer before. Has anyone experience with removing this spacer? If not, where would be the best place to try and find a replacement?
