You are in good company - I am awaiting a stainless steel water jacket for a Standard 8 from Kanters. I would suspect that the original steel insert (i.e., which the brass plate replaced) was so rotted out that when the prior owner decided to replace it with the brass plate there were no holes or otherwise a frame of reference that they should be there. I'd have to believe that there should be holes directed to each cylinder. It is my understanding that the water jacket receives cooled water from the radiator via the pump and equitably distributes it so hotspots are minimized. Mine still had the holes, but had enough rot that I decided to replace it as its effectiveness would've been greatly reduced.

The starter grounds where the starter and block make contact; clean both surfaces real good and see if it isn't that.

Thanks West -- I recall the parts book lists the same reinforcement plates for 726/733. I do agree the frame is quite a substantial mounting point without the reinforcements.

Wanted: Trunk Rack Strips 30/31

I need a set (5) of trunk rack strips for a 30 or 31 Standard 8. They are made out of stamped steel and were originally woodgrained. I'm only interested in straight, rust-free examples. I already have a set that look like they fell off the back of a truck going down the highway, and need something that will be a tight fit and finish.

No, if the sidemount arm were to be placed with the plate on the exterior of the splasher, it would sit on it. You'd still see it. I couldn't imagine the Packard engineers would've designed it that way. Perhaps the plate fits between the bracket and the splasher?

See plate in the attached file.
I think I figured it out. The service parts manual has a listing for a part 147892 -- Side Wheel Carrier Bracket Frame Reinforcement and lists the quantity as "2". I believe the plates mount on the inside of the frame and give extra rigidity to the mounting point.
