Re: 359 questions

Packard Don
The 359 and 327 were more or less the same engine with a different bore and stoke and as far as I recall, all external parts will interchange between them. Keep in mind, though, that the 359's 212 hp rating was based on the aluminum head and those are hard to come by, most having been long ago replaced with one or the other of the cast iron heads.

As for as a manual transmission on the 359, I believe the Ultramatic was optional on the senior 1954 Henney-Packards which came standard with the 359 so obviously without the option, they would have been manual. Since these coaches weighed close to three tons and some even over (my 1952 was 6,200 lbs), just check the parts book for a clutch for a 5413 and see what else it fits.

The back looks a little odd. Are you sure it’s Packard?

It looks like you need a good sand blaster nd some Ospho to treat it afterward. I’ve seen doors far worse than this fixed this way!

The SW347537, or at least the 347537 part of it, refers to the Packard part number which is apparently the same as Stewart Warner once the SW is added! Yours is apparently 19 tooth but for the R9 overdrive.

The one I'm looking for has 412444 so that must mean that it is SW412444 and is for certain R11 overdrives.

Which hearse? If a senior 1954, it would have had the 359 while the Henney Junior had the 288 or sometimes the 327.

Wat, I will have a 359 available soon but it needs a full rebuild and is West Coast.

The short answer about taking apart the door is no, but the longer answer is that it can be done but would require a skilled body shop and would probably be costly for questionable results. You would get far better results if you can find a place that can tank and phosphate the door if it really needs it.

That said, to me it looks better that most but, of course, I can't see inside. If just the usual surface rust, you can even treat it yourself with something like Ospho metal treatment.

Some Ford products only used a vacuum control for the timing and some other manufacturers - early on - used only mechanical control for the timing. Engines used for racing tend to use only distributors with only mechanical control as engine vacuum is low due to valve operation of the competition ground camshafts.

I have a 1940 Packard Autolite distributor that is mechanical-only.

Welcoming to Packards and to PackardInfo.com! You can look up your car's VIN on the Packard Decoder to see which model it is and to confirm that the engine is also the proper one, the same decoder can be used to look up the engine number!

Due to the geometry of parking brakes, they don't hold as well in reverse as they do forward. Have you ever noticed if you forget to release the brake you can back up but not go forward? All of my old cars are like that.

If you find the Stewart Warner number, can you please tell me what it is on your 19-tooth gear along with the part number? I’m looking for one just like it.
