wow it's good that my brake light issue sparked alot of interest

not only does the silicon oil prevent moisture in the brake system it also has a higher boiling point than regular brake fluid. just beware not to mix with regular brake fluid.

i think using a mechanical switch is a small price to pay to have dependable brake lights

one of the switches that I looked at, said that it was silicon compatable but I could not determine if the thread size was the same.

well folks I bought the NAPA P/N SL-134 switch and it works great, oh by the NAPA said the cost is $22.00 because I bought it from a company store not a franchise (did know the was a difference) oh well if it keep someone off my rear bumper it is well worth it.

the switch mounts on the outside of the firewall
the switch comes in the "normal on position" so the leaver is placed behind the pedal rod, when you apply the brakes the lever on the switch moves toward the front of the car and the brake lights come on, also you need to bend the lever at a 90 degree angle to the switch and turn one twist in the lever so the flat side will ride on the pedal arm ..(hope I did not lose anyone in the explaination). There is not alot of room to work because you have to work around frame.

for the last 2 days people have stopped beside me to tell me my brake lights are not working. It is true that if I don't put alot of pressure on the pedal the light does not come on, but if put alot of pressure on the pedal thay come on, do I need a new switch? or is there an aftermarket electric switch (where would I get one)

would taking the switch out and cleaning it make a difference

some people get a thrill telling you that there is a problem with your ride

good luck with you new Packard. I did the same thing rebuilt my brakes from the ground up including putting new liners on the shoes. I ask a shop how much they would charge to put new liners on my shoes an they wanted $40 per shoe that was $320 that I could use elsewhere on my 53 Packard. I bought new liners from Kanter for $90 and did myself. Since I replaced my complete system I switch to Dot 5 fluid, They say that it is less moisture resistant and has a lower boiling point. It works fine, haven't had any problems. I just completed my interior ( see forum for pictures) did it all myself at a fraction of the cost. If I told you how much you would call me a liar.
