Re: 1936 120 Gasket Question

Bill, I believe you are referring to a housing that is fastened to the front top of the cylinder head with two cap screws, and where the top radiator hose connects this to the radiator top tank. If your '36 One-Twenty is like my '37 Six, then this is the thermostat housing. You can easily make a gasket using the bottom of the housing as a pattern, or get one from one of the many Packard parts suppliers. While you are replacing this gasket it would be a good time to make sure the thermostat is the correct rating, is functioning, and is fastened into the housing with a retainer. Keep in mind that this Packard has a non-pressurized cooling system. You should not have a pressure radiator cap unless the system has been modified. Good luck, and let us know how this job goes.

Thanks Randy, Dave & JW for the sentiments. I too am sorry when anyone choses to leave but that's their choice. I'm only guessing that John's referring to me as the PAC webmaster, but to set the record straight, I'm not PAC's webmaster, never have been, and to my knowledge that person has never posted on this site.

John, You've got to be kidding? Kevin (and I do miss him) left of his own volition and no one forced him out. If we can't all get along and enjoy this HOBBY without personality squabbles it has become a sad world indeed. I don't know how informal you expect the site to be but it seems pretty darn easy going to me. Blaming Dave C. is just plain wrong. I just don't get it!

John, I wish you would not leave, but it is your decision. Clipper47's comments express my feelings too.

There is nothing that mechanically Secures the hood hinge to the car. As you have photo'd, the hood hinge sits on top of the front and rear thingy's that bolt to the cowl/radiator surround. They are not drilled to be adjustable. As Brian said, the San Diego region of PI reproduces these to maybe improve your fit to the hood hinge itself (which wears at this point, surprise, and not replaceable!), but the sad fact is this is an underengineered design and you simply need to get used to carefully raising and lowering your hood. Look at any 35-37 junior non-trailer queen and you will see scratches along the rear edge of the hood and along the cowl. The only mechanical attachment of the hood to the car is by the rod pivoted by the hood handles...

Don't know about a 36 but my 38 jr those afore mentioned 3 bolts in the center section do the job but on my 41 110 the center slides under a part of the cowl and is secured only at the radiator end.

It is nice to have other avenues to go to and to hear first hand on peoples experience with them.

I shall give them both a call today.

OK.. time to figure out my hood issue. So do you fellas think I am missing the attachment that bolts to the cowl? Does anyone have a schematic or pictures of what I might be missing?

On mine it does seem there is a place for the end of the hood to slide into but nothing secures it in place... ???

Thanks for the help on this one!!!!

Beginner question for you experts!

Where the radiator hose comes into the top of the block is that the thermostat? I have a leak there and need to buy a new gasket.

Thanks!!

And they say you can't find good help these days! Ha... you seem to find very talented help in those Hollywood Hills. You may need to trade that for a Packard limo if any more lovely helpers join your Packard Pit Posse.

But seriously, I am glad to see your making good progress!

Jim
