West, don't know if I could easily find it again but there is data on the Timken site about seal life for various substances as a function of shaft surface speed, finish, and eccentricity. It did include leather... Dave & West, --> this way please to the Timken specification. Leather is mentioned on page 17 (section 1B / VII) and on page 25 (section 1C / XV).

The heroic legend of three white Chaikas
My problem is, that I know at least five versions of that story including three continuations, two exceptions plus a couple of dementi and feel confident that the Packard universe has similar rumors. They just go on forever. To adduce as counter example please find below three websites which inform the world, that only one white Chaika ever has been built and Moby Dick was donated to Mrs. Tereshkova, the first female cosmonaut. example one (the Russian wikipedia): "...Все ?Чайки? окрашивались в черный цвет, за исключением одной белой ?Чайки?, подаренной Валентине Терешковой..." example two (THE GAZ-forum): "...Реальная белая 13я чайка была только одна. И эту белую чайку подариле первой женшине которая полетела в космос Терешкова. А остальные уже сами перекрашивали..." example three (one of several potential owners): "...Всего одна Чайка ГАЗ 13 была покрашена с завода в белый цвет и подарена правительством первой женщине-космонавту Валентине Терешковой...." Dave, the sailor, who believable stated to have served aboard the Constant says in the preamble:
"...Here are more photos of the Constant that I have collected over the years on the Internet. You have probably seen most of them, but I thought it would be nice to put them all on one page. ..." According to Wikipedia the vessel has "Four Packard ID1700 diesel engines" so either the sailor or Mr. Neal mistooks the engine. Mal, the style of the training film, its clear pictures and examples and moreover the clarity of both sound and content of explanatory comments reminds me on Flipper. Even the motion picture technology, steady cinematography, the alternating optimistic and dramatic background music and colors look resp. sound alike. <iframe width="425" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/dQ_G9mHszBU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

As above mentioned the pictures showing a bicolored car (another pic attached). In 1957 nine bicolored GAZ-13 went on a countrywide test drive (on about 13.000 miles) and the car above probably is one of them.
As to the question how many white Chaikas have been built I'm without confirmed information. Sometimes I've read about their quantity but the data have unfortunately been of uncertain origin. So all I can say is that original white painted Chaikas are a very rare sight. I know an original white station wagon, a former government ambulance. Is the white colored Chaika from the Estonian eastcars collection in original condition? A couple of dozen Chaikas served in their second life as wedding cars and for that reason there was an inflationary trend of white GAZ-13 in the mid-nineties.

Due to weight reasons the car doesn't have an own starter but starts by a so-called airclutch and fed compressed air. We did it and after a couple of revolutions it awoke with infernal sound.
And then we clapped spurs to our horses. I was equipped with a strong BMW V8 that delivers 215 hp but nevertheless without a chance because I don't have a racer heart. Well, I haven't been lapped 'cause I know how to broooaden up! Attach file: (28.68 KB)

Sam, thanks for registering. To ask for it is a kind of conditioned reflex - the so-called recorder reflex, also known in common parlance as Myrtle snapper reflex.
I wish you an interesting restoration period and strong spending restraint.

To quote a sailor: "We had FOUR of these babies on the Constant, and they were treated like GOLD!" Kev, it looks like mainstream disc filters, so it will become pretty difficult to check the paper end caps. Dave, it is the scholarliness of my interests which leads me to the question if you could show us a pic of a rear navy ash tray? [source:http://www.members.cox.net/ic2ddg36/constant2.htm]
