Battery or Generator Problem

Took the car out for a good drive this AM. `Lost turn signal, horn, brake lights and overdrive . Made it back to house. Car will not crank, totally dead. I do have interior lights, spot light, and radio but all very weak. NAPA battery # 7248 is 2 years and 9 months old. The ammeter was not over to C but just to the left of the middle dot. With lights on, it was half way over to D. It appears to me the generator was not charging the battery or the battery won't hold a charge.Every day is an adventure with an old car. Any help is appreciated.

A few months ago there was a set of Packard coat hooks in original Packard box with instructions included showing where to drill holes for the hooks for sale on ebay. They were for your series of car. I was out bid for them.

My 22nd series has what I call an ivory colored steering wheel and all the other plastic pcs sorta match that. I think the original color changes over time due to storage and environment. It will impossible to match original pcs exactly. All would have to be purchased new from same source to get a perfect match. All plastics deteariate over time including cars from the 60's 70's and 80's. All my Packard parts are original and they have survived very well.

Mr Vines, in tuning up my car, to make it as reliable as possible, I just did what you suggested. When I returned to pick up the car, the mechanic said, "you know those new parts aren't near as good as the original ones I took out."
Duh! why did you ask me to replace them then? Sure enough, the new capacitor went out after only 75 miles. I just barely made it back from a country drive to my house. Luckily I got another mechanic to come look at it at the house and he fixed it with a part that says made in USA. My shop is 35 miles away which would have required a $165.00 towing fee. Maybe I should leave well enough alone if the car is running ok.

I always check the Velocity channel to see whats on. Today Dan did a total frame off restoration of a 1953 Cadillac. It was a family heirloom and he did an outstanding job. He even found an original '53 air conditioning unit that was in very bad condition and added it to the car. This took many months I am sure but they didn't say how long. I think the owner spent over 100,000 dollars. He has a good website that explains his operation in Norfolk, Virginia.

Mr Kanter, with my father having owned the family business since 1945 and me since 1985, I know from where you speak. Unless you have owned and operated a business and made a payroll , people have no idea what it takes to do this. Bless you for keeping going. I intend to quit at age 66 and enjoy my Packard.

I ordered from Kanter today. It is nice to pick up the phone and order what you need. I just don't trust the parts I see on ebay for my Packard. I have ordered parts for my driver on ebay but it was a Dealership that had an Ebay store selling OEM factory parts. I would love to see the Packards the Kanters have restored.

Howard , you are so right about the switches. I had a time trying to figure out if my Electromatic clutch was on. It was so I got it turned off. It is also hard to operate switches while driving. Before driving by ones self it is best to set all controls before moving unless someone,[my wife], is along to help.
