I you are interested in this era of Packards you should buy Robert Neal's book, Packard 1948-1950. They are fine, under rated cars. Many people don't understand them very well

It is not a club sedan, it is regular 4 door sedan.

There were no two tone color schemes in the 23rd series. The upholstery is very incorrect. People are always claiming that they can paint and trim their car anyway they want. I am probably a fuddy duddy but if someone is too lazy or unwilling to try to get these close it makes me wonder about other work on the car.

The fender skirts are not on the car.

It is possible to run an overdrive car without a cable, I did it for a long time. The picture of the firewall is too dark to see if there is a relay. On these cars is is sliver, below the voltage regulator, I think, with a fuse on the outside and connections on both sides.

On the other hand. the paint and chrome are much better than on the 50 I used to own

Try reaching up and around the glove box. They taped the build code on top of the glove box, if you're really lucky it will still be there

Make sure that the engine is grounded to the frame. I had a 1950 Eight that was otherwise dead reliable that ate voltage regulators. I had it for 13 years and finally one of many mechanics that worked on it figured it our shortly before I sold it

Friends

Maybe I should buy a lottery ticket tonight. I tried to buy an original 23rd series Custom Eight over 20 years ago but didn't have the money. It is in not as nice shape now as it was. My memory is that the upholstery was something other than shadow cloth but I didn't know as much about them as I do now.

Price? Try to find one in that condition. Try to find one at all. 22nd series Custom Eights are not plentiful, but there are a heck of a lot more them around.

Thanks for posting the pictures. It saved me the bother of pulling the album apart to scan them.

Looking at them caused considerable reflection about the changes that have happened since, particularly in places like Warren. The two business started by the Packard brothers supported many families in Warren for over a century but the current owners were unable or unwilling to change the operations to keep manufacturing viable for the 21st century.

Makes one wonder about what innovation meant to different generations

Sad day

I have a picture around here somewhere taken by that building during the Centennial in 1999. There is a plaque Packard put on the wall celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first Packard. I used to own a 1950 Eight that was built very close to that event. Stuart Blond took a picture of me and the car by the plaque, 50 years after the car was built and the plaque installed , and 100 years after the first run.

Maybe I can figure out how to scan and post it.

The vapor degreasers bit the dust years ago due to environmental concerns. They used to be used to clean the rogue from musical instruments
beween polishing and lacquering. They can be obtained very easily now...

I stand corrected, actually I'm sitting. In the dim past I remember reading an English book where the subject came up, maybe my memory is equally dim.

The situation I seem to remember would be heavy regulation in rural districts of city slicker's toys, not unlike what happened in parts of the US.

If I find something to dig my self out I'l post it for inquiring minds
