Here are the numbers from a 1947 Six:
Motor # F39061
Casting Date 7-28-47
Casting # 388532

Also casting number from a 1955 Packard 400 is 440275-A
with Utica number C 12042

The diference is pretty small, and since an untrained eye sees pitted chrome, and it takes a trained eye to see this difference, these handles win out.
This is the little gap I was talking about between the handle and the trim.

Your replacement handle may be from a 1955-56 model. They look almost identical to the 1951-54 type but do have a different profile at the belt moulding.

Re: 36 Packard Hood Hinge

Bill,

There should be a front and a rear bracket that the curled around part of the hinge slides into. The brackets bolt to the cowl at the back and to the radiator shell at the front and are often deformed beyond easy repair. Reproductions are available from the San Diego region of PI. They also list them for sale on eBay at times.

what about 55 senior trans to 55 junior car...same? or is it only the 56 senior to junior that needs this flange you talk about?

thanks,

Hank[/quote]

Hank,

You already have the correct flange. Possibly one of the few parts worth salvaging from your transmission. It will bolt up to any 1955 or 1956 transmission tail shaft. The difference is between the Packard and Clipper models with the Packard using a larger diameter u-joint.

The Delco 1918148 points are the original equipment for 1955-56 Packards and correspond to Packard part # 530943. Used widely for many GM vehicles as well.

Someone may have put a 356 cylinder head on it. The bolt pattern is the same as for the 288 and 327 heads.
Easiest way to confirm a 356 is to check the engine number.

I've sent 3 complaints to eBay on these listings over the last month with no results. I guess that eBay cares more about listing fees than the happiness of their buyers.

Re: Broken Axle

I had the same thing happen to a 1946 Clipper 6 that I once owned and believe it was caused by the nut being too loose. I had noticed a rhythmic creaking noise when driving at low speed before it broke and was later told by an old time Packard mechanic that this was indicative of the nut not being tight enough. My tire was beat up a bit but the brake drum was trashed.

The plugs are hard to remove since they were staked at the factory as noted in the service procedure. I have taken them out with the same type of socket that you are using and it does take quite a bit of force. Don't know of any other way to do it.

Re: Carter 644SA Question

I have the Carter specification sheet for the 644S and 644SA carburetors. It shows only 2 balls - the small one used for the accelerator pump suction (under the screen at the bottom of the plunger chamber) and the larger one used for the starter switch. Only a needle valve is used for the accelerator pump discharge.
