Check out Service Counselor Vol 30 #5https://www.packardinfo.com/xoops/html/downloads/SC/SC-VOL30NO5.pdf That article explains why the holes were added and what to look for in the combination of other components that would need the holes drilled near the teeth.

The shift motor can be removed with the transmission in the car without making that modification.

Dave advised me how to remove the shift motor and it works well without modifying anything.

Is this another method that does not involve removing the tail shaft and shoving the engine and trans to the right to provide clearance? If so I don't remember hearing of another method and would like to learn that secret. If not will cutting the 1/4" off the shaft allow the motor to rotate or drop straight down without further disassembly?

Yes, it involves pushing the engine/transmission to the right but does not require removing the tailshaft.

Is there a post or written procedure on the easier method of removal to refer others to or is it just a matter of unbolting the mount and shoving the trans over? I would have thought Packard would have done it that way if it was just a matter of shoving over. Is there something else that needs to be checked or happen first..

Just use the shop manual method except it is not necessary to remove the tailshaft. Its pretty common knowledge that the tail shaft can remain in place, at least among the folks I speak with that have done this job. If you want confirmation check with Ross or Randy Berger.

Yes h.

But I tried it. And still could not remove motor.

So while I had it out..cut shaft back...if I ever have to remove it. I will know then..

But Ross said it will come off. Just need to jack trans over..

But I think you need to lower it a bit.. Cause the flange hits ..that was my problem..

Mr pushbutton has how to take off motor..but could not do it..that way..
