Good advice, I had to do that on mine.It wasn't distorted much,but it was distorted.Don't over tighten! Brian

Thanks! I did overtighten, I used the wrong RTV, and I didn't straighten out the areas between holes.

By the third time or fourth time i take this motor apart I may figure out how to do some things right.

Thanks for the inspiration! The packard didn't make the trip to the car show, but I went all three days. Back to the Fifties draws 12,000 street rods (read: small block chevys) and 115,000 spectators. It's a great time.

Here's the theft-proof number.

Only 2 packards I saw, and I think one had a small block chevy as the power plant. Here's one they wanted 79,900 for:

Fuel pump rebuild pictures (the pump works great, I haven't checked the amount of vacuum but it seems very good):

Rebuilding a fuel pump can be a little frustrating, so be prepared for that. Arthur Goulds rebuilds fuel pumps also.

I put a rebuild kit in mine, I could only replace the 2 fuel check valves, the 2 vacuum check valves were stamped into the pump and I would have to had to grind them out. They seemed to be in good operation so I left them.

Take good pictures, and a lot of them, during the tear down of the fuel pump. I had to grind away one side of a pin that held the rocker and kick it out with a center punch. The square pins that moved the fuel diaphragm and the vacuum diaphragm were hard to line up during reassembly, the manual gives good information but not quite enough. I say I did that reassembly 12 times before I got it right.

The fuel pump kit came with many things I didn't use. The brass fuel screen they sent did not include the little brass frame the original had, so I reused the old one.

BigKev's slide show was for a different brand fuel pump than mine. Like he says many things are the same but not quite everything.

On mine the casting on the fuel side that held the bowl bolt was broken, so I had to go with a longer bolt for the bowl with more threads. I actually used a spare 3/8-16 stud (course one side, fine thread the other) instead. I think a bolt with a head would be better.

1948 22 Series Packard my dad owned. That's my mom on the fender, I'm in the front seat, and I believe that's the USS New Jersey in the background. We no longer have this car.

The temperatures are still in the 20's and they are predicting several inches of snow tonight (Valentine's Day 2010). I'm getting pumped to get back into the garage and start getting the water pump off of the Packard, and sending it to New York to be rebuilt. I considered just buying one off of Kanter, but I still have to pull the original one and mail it in or pay 150 core charge.

Then it's time to take the right fender off again and get the intake/exhaust manifold to play well together. There's a leak between the two and I plan on putting a high temp gasket there where the two meet under the carb.

Hope all is well with the people who frequent this forum, it's been a long winter and I'm excited to get back into "Packard Rebuilding" mode.
