8x10 black and white Packard Co. file photograph, from copy neg. of glass negative, of 1899 Packard Model A Number Two. Inscribed on photo back; 1-cylinder, 9-horsepower, 71.5-inch wheelbase 2-person roadster with carriage top, body by Morgan & Williams, carriage manufacturer, Warren, Ohio. This second Packard automobile--History was, for about a year, the personal conveyance of William Doud Packard who is said to have driven the car as far as Lakewood, N.Y. Behind the wood panel dash was a compartment for tools & packages, with a cushioned top for use as an emergency seat, and surrounded on three sides by a brass rail. W.D. Packard's son Warren recalled that at about age 9 he would perch on this emergency seat for dear life to keep from going overboard. All 5 Model A Packards were either completed or under construction in 1899 and all considered to be 1899 Packards. Item # EB01c006 Photo courtesy of the Detroit Public Library, National Automotive History Collection and used with permission. Reproduction Permission Form and Price List |

| 1901 Model C engine details 2

Some further pictures of a Model C engine. On the side image you can see the large counterweights of the crankshaft, and also the governor for the centrifugal spark advance (patent 667,792 of 2/12/1901). The crankcase is an "open" case; rings are oiled by an oiler on top of the cylinder and the excess oil that is below the rings just blows out the back (facing forward), making a tidy little mess to clean up after driving. This particular car did the London-Brighton run and I can only guess at what the cleanup was like. I'm guessing the rpm range of this motor was probably from about 60 (idle) to perhaps 800 max. Not too different in multiple than today's engines. |
