Franay of France did a number of bodies on Packard chassis in the late 30s, several of them are pictured in Hugo Pfau's nice book. This lovely one-off had an interesting history, ordered originally by a French aristocrat and taken over by the Nazis after the fall of France, and used by the Military Governor of Paris as a staff car. When the Germans fled, the car was picked up, repainted in US olive drab, and used by the US armed forces. It suffered a serious accident and was bought and returned to the States in 1953 by a US military man and underwent a restoration about 20(?) years later. It was exhibited at Pebble Beach this year and pictured in the current (December 08) issue of Car Collector magazine. Current owner is in New Jersey. Photo by my friend Jeff Guss on 12/7/08 at the CCCA Metro Region Christmas Party.

This picture and the following information on this photo provided by notable Packard historian Jim Pearsall:

"Subsequent to Mrs. Packard?s ownership the car later was owned by a funeral parlor in Warren, and I suspect that?s the original source of the photo. It was published many years ago in an article in ?Cars and Parts,? although I don?t recall who wrote the article, possibly Hugo Pfau."

Not the greatest picture quality, a print from a very old slide taken by this writer at Hershey about 1964 - 1968 perhaps. I believe this is either a 4th or 5th series 48 Imperial Limousine, body type #69. As I remember this car was being used as an ambulance for a private church-supported hospital in southern New Jersey at the time it was "discovered" and bought for restoration. Takes a tall garage to house this lovely example of early Packard elegance.
