Re: Ultramatic Transmission leaking
Home away from home
Home away from home

R H
If it's leaking from the rear main area.

It's the converter seal. Which is on the bell housing.

Other 2 options. Manual valve seal. Or. Throttle valve seal.

Or the trans pan.

Except pan.

Trans needs to removed..

The way I look at it. If it'd not a recent rebuild.

While it's out. Might as well rebuild it.

Brake Light Switch
Home away from home
Home away from home

53 Cavalier
My brake lights work, but I have to press firmly on the pedal, I don't suspect they're on when I'm just sitting at stop light with gentle pressure to keep my car from rolling. (53 Cavalier-Ultramatic)

I suspect I need to replace the brake light switch. I think I read somewhere that they can be problematic, or maybe this is just the way they were??? I know I can upgrade and put a mechanical switch under the dash, but I don't really want to.

In hindsight I should have replaced last summer when I rebuilt my Treadle Vac......

Thoughts?

Packard Don
The column shift was standard on 1939 Six and Eight models (my first Packard was a 1939 Six sedan) but even the Registry photo confirms that it is a 1939. 1938s had a trim piece running up onto the roof from the windshield divider, the door handles were similar but noticeably wider and the wheel covers were smooth rather than ribbed. Your wheel covers appear to be the 1938 type but the rest of the car is not!

39 makes more sense as I thought that was the first year the steering column gearshift or Handishift became available on Packards. There is a 39 Data book in the archives if you want to learn more about the car.

Dancesr for including your Packard in the Registry.

Note O_D's comment concerning the Theft Proof Number which idicates your Packard is a 1939 and not a 1938. Your Registry entry is easily correctible if this is the case.

A very nice looking Packard with no outward signs of the 350/TH transplant.

Theft-proof number 486812 would be a 1939 body. 1939 numbers ran from 468392 to 517170.

Title of the post says 1938 while the interior photo shows a car with a column shift ala '39. '38's were the last year with a floor shift, so a conundrum there. '38's also came with an ID decal in lieu of an ID plate and most of the decals have not survived the years.

Gotcha. The 55 and 56 trans are 1 to 1 with the models. So it would have to have been swapped. I say that only because some parts are different between them.

BTW, manual is in the Literature Archive.

'55 400. Needs aesthetic parts put back on, and electrical system sorted.
'55 Clipper Deluxe. Engine is stuck-ish.

This is very helpful. Thank you

I will have to get underneath the car and take a closer look. I would imagine its a 56 trans since its an end of production car, but better to be sure.
