Re: Back up Light Bulb

Can't help with the bulb number but surely someone else will be able to post it. For what it's worth, in 53 and 54 it was #1133

Back up lights were optional and until 53 when some common options started becoming more standard and made it onto the basic wiring diagrams, Packard usually provided option or accessory wiring only with the instructions on how to install the option.

I do not know who originally posted this info but here are the instructions for installing back up lights on the 22-23 series. Packard shows power coming off the tail light terminal of the headlight switch which would mean they will only work at times when the parking or headlights are on.

Is it possible the internal contacts are the problem?
What is the procedure to access and test them?

Thanks

Back up Light Bulb

Hello to all. On an 1950 Super eight, what number bulb is used for the back-up light?. I checked the 23rd series manual, it's not listed. I checked 24 series no listing. After dissembling the light there was no bulb in the socket. As I am pulling new wires as I go along, I found it interesting there is no wiring information in the wiring schematic. No colors or wire sizes in the schematic for the 22,23 24 series for the back-up light switch. Or where to get the power from. My current plan is to get power from the accessory breaker. But I still need a bulb number. Can anyone help?.

Speedo pinion to use will depend on your rear axle ratio and tire size.

For 1946 models with overdrive, the 6 cylinder cars came with a 4:55 to 1 rear axle and the small 8 cylinder cars came with 4:3 to 1. Standard tires were 15 inch and export may have been 16 inch.

Best match speedo pinion will be the 412443 which has 18 teeth and was used with axle ratios of 4:3 and 4;36 for 15 inch tires

412442 has 17 teeth and used for axle ratios of 3:9 and 4:1

412444 has 19 teeth and was used for taxi and commercial chassis cars with 4:36 axle ratio and 16 inch tires. This one will be scarce.

During the fuel pump rebuild, did you pre-load the diaphragm as you screwed the halves back together.

I am having a fuel starvation situation. I took the Super out on a "quick" road test Saturday, only planned to do 1/4 mile or so to test the vacuum system. The car died 4 times and I had to have my wife bring the truck to tow it back home.

Here are the facts:
-Fuel pump newly rebuilt by me, no leaks
-Carb rebuilt by me
-Fresh fuel (5 gallons) in the fuel tank
-Existing aux electric fuel pump near the fuel tank (works)
-Line from the fuel pump to the carb confirmed clear
-Car idles okay, but after giving it some gas the fuel doesn't seem to catch back up and it dies. Confirmed no fuel in the carb....accelerator pump dry. No fuel in the line from the pump the carb.

Where should I start looking? I followed the directions to the letter when the fuel pump was rebuilt. I can't understand where the problem would be there. I don't know the history of the fuel tank, but the gas in the fuel bowl is clean and clear. Any thoughts?

I have not worked on my 1956 yet but I understand that the boxes were quite different for 1955. Is it possible that one of yours is that type?

The switch operation and except for the bottom terminal area inside the box, are identical. The main difference between 55 and 56 boxes is external. 55 had 3 exposed screw terminals which could corrode when wet so for 56 they changed to bullet type terminals and enclosed them in a weathertight box. They also added two extra double contact tie point terminals in that enclosure to accommodate the change of limit switch type. A service bulletin was issued noting that when 55 switches ran out the 56 switch was to be used and a short pigtail needed to be ordered and spliced to the 55 loom to connect to the different style terminals.

On your boxes, if cleaning the contacts did not work it almost sounds like you would be a candidate for a solid state switch conversion. Since the Pacific Northwest Region no longer lists them on their projects page I don't know if they still handle them or who else might. Believe the work was done on an exchange basis but maybe someone else knows a source.

If not, the conversions seem to be relatively simple. Photos posted seem to show the original relays and bimetal elements were removed and two time delay relays used in place of the original components. I don't have a photo of the solid state box to post but Riki might have posted some on one of his project blogs. Since the conversion is so simple I know he was doing some research on available relays Amazon carries to find some that might work. Don't know if he actually found one or did a conversion yet but maybe if he sees this post he can answer. Amazon does have a pair of 10 second delay cube types that might work but without actually doing a conversion myself I cannot say for sure they would work or fit inside the switch box.

I have not got to try the timing relays out.
But no reason they would not work.

The circuit board. A model train guy I know can make up a circuit board.

Then gerber file it to a pcb manufacturers..

Pretty cheap..

But also.

Was going to hit up hh56 about how to replace the solenoids with something solidstate.and heavy duty relays

This is all wonderful information thank you!! so if I want to get one of these working I got to start working on getting Box two fixed by finding out why the yellow terminal is always going to ground.

R H, that doesnt look to bad to replicate. I can try and do something like that if you dont have the time and dont mind sharing the gerber file, wiring diagram, and component information.

I just heard from my hosting provider that they are terminating their contract with one of their data centers due to rising costs. That data center happens to be where this server is hosted.

As such, they need to relocate my VPS server to one of their other leased data centers. I'll let you know when this is going to happen. But hopefully, it only involves being down for a few hours.

Smear it with silicone grease or waterless hand cleaner, sit it over the hole and then jack up the frame of the car so that the falling shock arm pushes it into place.
