removal of Power steering
Just popping in
Just popping in

upsidedown
I could do with some helpful advise on how to remove the power steering pump on a 1956 Patrician.
At this stage I haven't been able to work out removal or even loosen to put tension on the belt. I can see the slot in the bracket on the block that allows you to adjust the tension but for the life of me I cannot work out what else has to be removed to achieve that.
What I am trying to do is replace the water cooling hose and to give me better access to that I thought I would remove the power steering pump. I have checked in the archives but haven't been able to find anything to help.
Thanks in anticipation
Geoff

Well the front drums really were easy once I knew the right process. Thanks again. I likely misunderstood my dad when he was talking about the drum puller. I’m sure now, that he was talking only about the rear.

Thanks, guys! I was going off what my Dad had told me he had to do when he had gotten the car running again in 2004 (it sat again since then).

I hadn’t done much as I was just setting up and then going to do more research. Glad I didn’t get in a hurry. I think your help will prevent a lot of difficulty and possibly damage.

I’m sure I’ll soon become that annoying guy asking LOTS of questions.

I’ll be making my first trip to Hershey this year. I’d like to meet as many folks from this group as possible. Let me know if you’ll be there.

Agreed. No puller is needed on the front. Once the axle nut is removed it should pull off. If not, you need use the brake spoon on the adjusted wheel on contract the brake shoes.

I believe the coil springs are individual and held onto a heavy wire support structure by wire clips or hog rings. If you can get a decent height and wire gauge match most springs of that type can be replaced. Your upholstery guy could do it or if you wanted to save a buck or two you could probably do it too.

Many upholstery supply stores carry various types of springs and you might do a search for upholstery supply firms. In the meantime here is a place that offers coil springs. There are other places that will custom make springs if readily available stock springs can not be shortened to size or otherwise will not work.

I get that but what alternative do I have?

Can the spring be removed and replaced with modern foam? The thick stuff?

Deaty, to PackardInfo and for including your '55 Clipper in PackardInfo's Packard Vehicle Registry.

However, I'm concerned your Clipper may not be correctly identified in the Registry. As per the image below, the MODEL BODY your showing is 5522 while the VIN NUMBER is 5562-4551. I could be wrong(somebody correct me{gently} if I am), but I thought the Body Number and the first section of the VIN Number should be the same. I.E 5522 OR 5562 for both. Fixing this, if it is an issue, can be done by going in and editing your Registry entry to reflect the correct designation.

I would not use a puller on the front hub/drums. If the drums are stuck to the shoes, or if the shoes are adjusted fairly tight, the drums may hang up on the shoes.

The solution is to back off the brake shoe adjustment all the way, which should allow the drum/hubs to come off without risking any damage to the hardware, shoes, or drums.

On the rear, the same situation can occur. The same solution applies, except that you will most probably need a puller of the correct type to get the druum/hubs off the axles.

It's a good idea to back off the brake adjusters at each wheel and make sure that the drums turn freely before attempting to remove the hub/drum assemblies, front or rear, and especially the rear.

Also make sure the parking brake is fully released before attempting to pull the rear drum/hubs.

With any luck, you won't have stuck wheel cylinder pistons.

I expect it is this obsolete computer.
It's a WalMart Dell XPS 420 with Windows Vista.

Internet service here is DSL via an old copper line. Besides that, I'm out on the extreme fringe of the provider's service area and too far from the (old) substation for the DSL to ever work at full speed.

That situation probably won't change anytime soon. They (telephone co-op) are building a modern fiber optic system, but they are concentrating on areas where there are denser concentrations of customers. I'll be among the last to be reached by either of two companies that are offering service in this region, one being the telephone co-op and the other being an REA type electric co-op.
