I believe outdated software is the issue and if you cannot upgrade yours there may not be an easy answer without a different computer. I have a similar outdated computer issue with an old Mac that still works great for some things but is one that has a CPU that is no longer supported by Apple. I can no longer upgrade the operating system and because it has an old OS and browser I can not open some websites or get many new programs for it either.

The older service counselors on site, many of which I contributed, may have been scanned and processed on that computer and most were posted several years ago. Cannot speak to other items in the archive but those I did used a pdf converter that is built in and native to MacOS. Those files were reduced to a manageable size using a much earlier and now obsolete version of Acrobat.

The ones posted today were probably also done at that time using the same MacOS built in converter. Since Adobe went to a subscription model with Acrobat I no longer have that to use so those counselors posted today were reduced in size by another program. While the program used is not Acrobat it is using the latest Mac and Adobe pdf generation and reading specs. They should still open on any fairly recent computer. That seems to be evidenced so far by others not having issues.

May jack stands showed up today. Now, to get started on the brakes….right after I get the hubs off. I need a bigger hammer. I’ll get that tomorrow.

Right now, I have to go mow the lawn.

There is a chance it is internal. A lever is held by a setscrew to the shaft rotated by the lever on the outside. The inside lever is made of potmetal and the threads for the setscrew are known to strip letting the screw loosen or fall out completely. Once the screw is loose or out, the lever is free to rotate on the shaft and cannot move the selector valve.

If you disconnect the outside linkage and grab hold of the outer lever, once out of the park position there should be no discernible play between positions as you move from one gear to another. The detents are in the valve body and in park and neutral the valve body is in the neutral configuration. Rotating the lever after leaving neutral, each of the drive and reverse positions will have a distinct detent. If there is any slop you need to check the setscrew. If the lever is stripped, the screw will not hold and you will need to add a roll pin. Even if it still tightens, for peace of mind tighten it gently, set the lock nut, and drill a hole thru the lever and shaft to install a roll pin.

If the lever is still tightly attached to the shaft, one other possibility is the link connecting the lever to the manual valve and detent has lost a pin on either end. If that has happened the valve and transmission will stay in whatever gear it was in when the pin fell out.

Here are the two suspect things to check. Both can be checked by draining the fluid and dropping the pan. If the pan comes off, you may need a new gasket. Before replacing also use a straightedge to verify the bolt hole locations in the pan have not been distorted by bolts being too tight. If the metal has been pushed out of line the new gasket will leak. A few gentle taps at any distorted hole using a small hammer to level the holes is all it takes to get things good again.

I don't know about easy, but I'd expect rusty springs to break in service.

Even non rusted springs can be sagged or weak, and that can make a nice looking redone seat uncomfortable.

This computer won't accept newer versions of Adobe, or much of anything else. It seeks odd that this function has worked well until today, and it still works on any of the other material in the literature archive.

1955 Clipper Custom Touring 4dr; Stuck in reverse??
Just popping in
Just popping in

Deaty
Hi all! I'm new to Packards, being an Aircooled VW/Classic Mopar man almost my entire life.

I recently picked up a '55 Clipper Custom with a 352 and a two speed ultramatic. The shifter feels fairly loose, but the linkage is confirmed to be moving not only from the column, but also on the transmission.

However, even after starting, or parked with the engine off, and no matter the position of the shifter, the car will not come out of reverse.

This car is parked on solid, flat, level ground; yet it refuses to come out of reverse. I have tried moving the linkage on the side of the transmission in every conceivable direction to no avail. It is full of fluid, and I cannot for the life of me figure out what is wrong unless it is something internal.

Thanks in advance!

You may need to update your version of Adobe Acrobat. The newer versions support newer PDF versions/features and new compression levels. It's possible these pdf are using compression that your older version of Acrobat doesn't support or know anything about. Hence the corrupt message.

It was a fun day today but I had to add a nice thick layer of stupidity on top of it.

I loaded up all the old brittle, dirty, interior parts and hauled them to the interior guy.

At least, I thought I loaded it all up. When I got back to my shop later in the day I found the complete back seat sitting right where I left it.

The interior shop is going to spend a couple of days inspecting everything and we will discuss it later. I'll take the back seat to him then.

I may have to replace the front seat springs. There was a good deal of rust on that piece. That should be easy, right.
