Re: Olds oil pump conversion comments??

Eric Boyle
Keith's right, it should be referred to as the "Olds oil pump conversion, as there are other oil pump manufacturers out there besides Melling that make Oldsmobile oil pumps.

Standardization of the name now will make it easier for those in the future to figure out what we've done.

It take us 4 hours just to get out of the mess on 80/94.

Thanks for the insight on the sites to see on the way back. I will need to mention this to my better half.

What weekend would this be in MAY?

Hi Ian,

Welcome, I too am new at this having recently purchased a '38 120 Sedan. It was restored by the previous owner 20 years ago and is registered for full road use which I intend to follow with some restrictions mainly weather and/or traffic conditions being favorable. So, although I don't have the task that you have ahead of you, I am now on the lookout for a Pre-WW2 Packard as a restoration project for my retirement at the end of July.

Hey Tom -

You don't have to do an East Coast fall foliage tour to enjoy a great Packard meet. Perrysburg is just below Toldeo, OH - though the meet site will move about 25 miles down the road to Fremont for next year..

As a tyke, we travelled to Berwyn to visit my uncle (once or twice in dad's Exec) and the trip took all day - about eight hours (I'm told). Today, I can be in Perrysburg (from my hometown in W. Penna.) in about 3-1/2 hours. So, I bet you could make it there from Chi-town in about 4 hours.

While Hershey is one of those things that every old car enthusiast needs to experience at least once, there have been many more Packards at the Perrysburg event (even the Warren Museum meet in July) than I've ever seen on the show field at Hershey. The Chicagoland Packard owner's are usually well represented at Perrysburg.

On the way back, Sunday, you can check out the ACD Museum in Auburn, IN (about a half an hour south off _I-80/90, down I-69) and the Sudebaker Museum in South Bend to make it an unforgettable weekend.

Ian -

Welcome to THE BEST online forum for Packard owners everywhere!

My focus is on the V8s, but I can appreciate the prewar cars as a spectator. I think you have a good project car that will turn a lot of heads up there in The Great White North - and that's coming from someone who finds the most joy in working on his cars.

Your car is bound to generate a lot of discussion and attract the attention of more prewar owners. Don't be shy about asking questions. This forum, unlke others, is fully archived and searchable, and answers to your question may help another future owner. You can also document your progress (and toot your own horn) in the Project Blogs Forum.

If you haven't done so already, please add your car and to the growing Owner Registery here. Feel free to download any information in the articles section or upload whatever you have to offer - this site all about sharing experience and info to help keep these fine cars on the road.

Allow me to rephrase the question. Which AUTOMOTIVE APPLICATION of the Melling pump is everyone using????
As in FOrd????? Is it a Chevy????? Maybe a Yugo???

My point is that Melling is NOT the only aftermarket Olds pump manufacturer. This rudimentary and generic reference to "Melling pump" mite very well create ambiguity especialy into the future.

Thanks Joel - shouldn't be but a couple days in the mail 'til it arrives.

I did get a pic, this weekend, of the material currently installed on my Hardtop, but am a litle short on time this evening. Tune in tomorrow for the rest of the story.

Keith -

I have Melling's M-22FHV pump and 22-FHVS screen kit.

I had purchased these for the '56 Pat that I intended to use as a fair weather driver, but have not yet installed them.

Thus far NOONE has confessed to WHICH "Melling pump" (note quotation marks) they have except for me. Am i the only one with an Olds HD pump and the rest of u are using somekind of highly specialized Melling pump that i don't know about????
