Bowman, that is correct. You want the T/L bars loaded just as if the car was on the ground. I like to place the front jackstands as close to the wheel as possible. That way you are getting the max amount of leverage against the bars. I always give the car a good shove from different sides/ends to make sure the stands are stable. These big cars hurt when they fall on you.
Just for grins, you may want to grease the car while it's up on stands. Refer to the shop manual and catch all those fittings. I grease mine once a year.

Randy, I suppose the rear end would mean putting the jacks under the axle and not under the frame.

Latest issue of the PAC membership directory lists about 110 1956 Patricians and there are perhaps an equal number in other hands.

My wifey was feeling generous yesterday, and she bought me four Gladiator Wall Cabinets to help control the mess that is occurring in the garage. As I have been buying more and more tools and supplies to work on the car, I have been quickly running out of places to put them. Couple that with all of the parts removed from the car, and my two car garage is starting to look like something out of Sanford and Son.

These will help to get stuff up off the ground, and more importantly off my workbench. Now all I need is a couple of tall cabinets and I will be all set. I am hoping to finally get back to finishing off the garage remodel. All I need to do is go buy about 20 sheets of plywood for the unfinished walls. Buying is no problem, finding someone with a truck to pick them up for me has been a challenge.

Well while not exactly related to working on my Packard, it will help in the long run. I think the reason my Packard project has moved along so slow, is that I have been sharing the money and time between actual work on the car, and getting the garage, tools, and supplies bought and sorted out so can work more effectively on the car.

I want to make some real progress on the garage and the car this winter while it's cool. As summer really limits the amount of time I can spend in the garage with the heat. Perhaps I will just break down and buy a big A/C unit for the garage before next summer. I know that would really help out.

BiKev,

While I'd like to be a Pre-War Ambassador I just don't qualify on what I consider to be the most important of the criteria you listed, namely "Answering questions when possible, or helping in the tracking down of information".

Being a relatively new owner of 2 Pre-War Packards I certainly am in the right area, but with less than 6 months experience, and without the knowledge or sources of information referred to I cannot hold myself up as an expert, just very enthusiastic at this stage.

Saying that, I have been welcoming new forum members and encouraging the adding of their cars to the Owner Registry anyway and I'll continue to do so, albeit in an "unofficial" capacity.

I encourage anybody else with the requisite knowledge and technical skills to respond to BigKev's request to round out this forum.

Dave, first of all Welcome to the Website. Please let us know about what Packard vehicles you own.

As to your question,

The Forum Ambassadors are folks that help out with a specific forum with things like:

-Welcoming new folks
-Encouraging folks to add their cars to the Registry
-Answering questions when possible, or helping in the tracking down of information.

..and various things of that nature.

My personal knowledge is limited to the 51-54 models. While I would say that I am not close to being an expert, I can hold my own and help other folks with their 51-54s. We just need more folks to be able to help people with the other Series/Years.

The 55-56 is probably the best represented forum. As we have several experts that know every bolt in them.

I would think that number would be far higher than 6 or 7. There are 7 registered on here. If you were to ask the PAC or PI roster keepers, I am sure you will find that number in the 100's.

Somewhere at home I have the 2007 PI members directory which lists who owns what car (of it's membership). If I can find it I will try to get you a rough count on what PI is reporting.

I am picking up the car later today. It is about an hour away. I have been researching '56 Patrician information for the last few days, and it appears that only 6 or 7 still exist out of the 3775 built!

Bowman, I may be reading your post and interpreting it badly.
First, put the car on jackstands - two at the lower A-frames and two supporting the rear end.
To make the motor run FOR A COUPLE OF REVOLUTIONS ONLY just to see if it works you must attach the negative battery terminal or jumper to a good ground and then touch one OR the other motor terminals with the positive lead. One terminal will make it run CCW and the other will make it run CW. That is just a test to see if the motor will work. If it does then you have a wiring problem to correct. You will need to disconnect the limit switches from the control box to unscrew them. Don't lose the copper washers on each switch. When you have the limit switches repaired and reinstalled disconnect the compensator control rod by removing the small nut securing the rod to the grommet at the main torsion bar. You can then manually move the control rod and thus the compensator control. Be patient as there is approximately a 7 second delay built in. If the mechanism now works satisfactorily, reconnect the rod. If not, double check the inline fuses under the hood near the solenoids. If necessary you can remove the field and armature as a unit but you will have to fashion a plate at the end of the motor to support the armature for any kind of testing. Good luck and let us know your progress.
