I read an article at www.allpar.com (Mopar stuff) and a tech that used to run the dynos talked about problems that they had with the Pennsylvania crude oils having alot of paraffin in them naturally. ...and it caused poor flow when cold. ...but that was in the 70's.

Source for replacement "tension/return" springs on carb linkage...

Hi,

I'm rebuilding my Carter carb for my '49. I notices that one of the return springs is bad (end rusted off) does anyone have a source for a replacement? Daytona carbs doesn't include springs in the carb kit. ...as I think that no rebuild kits do. Is my only option a junk carb?

I would think that a local builder would be a good resource to answer your questions. As they are the most familiar with conditions, building techniques, and rot-resistant materials used out there. ...also the indigenous bugs and creatures that might eat said materials and dwellings.

I have my gradfather's car. He bought it new in '49. It's not running since '58. It has the same rust issues.

I plan on repairing the rotted areas. (as I don't have space for another Packard to tear parts off of. ...already have two) The engine is free, and I plan on rebuilding it. I will replace the interior.

As the interior and paint will be new, and the body and engine will be the original, I would think of it as the original car. (Please don't read that as "original condition")

We are/were both cheap and enjoyed doing things ourselves.
I will do as much as I can, including the engine rebuild.

If it throws a rod or seizes up, I gave it my best.

...just my thoughts and intention.

I was looking at the nickel, black oxide, and Copy Cad & Zinc plate systems.

Or if anyone else has any experiences with any other products?

Position of engine number on a "G" Super 8...

More than a couple of years ago, I picked up a spare Super 8 engine. I was looking at it yesterday and while the number on the engine is a "G414223C" the number "pad" is in the middle of the block, not at the rear like other 22nd, 23rd series engines. Is this a replacement engine? Also, what is the "C" mean, if anything.

...a not "happy" experience.

When I first bought my Packard I drove to my State Farm agent. They took pictures of it and sent it to their underwriter for a price. The price they gave me was "reasonable". ...or so I thought. They asked me the value and I told them, basically what I paid (that was what the price guide was showing). And they were happy. I asked if I would need an appraisal, and they told me "no".

But, they did tell me when they expected me to use it... To and from parades, an ocassional car show, and no recreational driving. very limited use. I seem to recall them telling me under 500 miles a year.

Then three months later, in December, when the car was put away, they called me and told me that I needed to get an appraisal, ASAP. I told them that it would have to wait until spring. They started calling weekly in late February. Well, by end of March I called Haggerty.

My "reasonable" price with State Farm, turned out to be twice the price of Haggerty. Haggerty also told me that I could drive it whenever/wherever, and no mileage limitations.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I had two autos and a home insured with State Farm for 18 years. I'm not sure what loyalty gets you these days. I could only imagine my experience if I did have a claim.
