Re: valve cover color

The 55 Clipper had a decal. I haven't had a 56 Clipper for some time but seem to remember that the valve cover was stamped clipper.

I had problems with rough idle, missing on acceleration and generally poor performance on my 55 Caribbean. I rebuilt the carb and distributor, replaced plugs, wires, and messed around with the timing. I couldn't get the thing right and was stumped. I was getting ready to pull the heads. Forunately, as a last act before pulling the engine, I looked at the resistor and found that someone had installed an Autolite. I got a Delco out of my junk pile, installed it and my god, the thing started instantly and ran beautiful. Guess all the tinkering helped, but the main culprit was the wrong resistor.

I was wondering if it possible that the new fuels don't give the mileage we use to get in the 50s and 60s. I know the octane level is lower now. I remember 100 octane and if you went to some stations you could brew up to 110' I remember my first Packard that I bought while in the Army at Fort Bliss in the early 60s would get over 300 miles on a tank and still would not be entirely empty.

You will have to remove the speedometer from the car. I found the best way to do this is to remove the glove compartment and work from there instead of under the dash. You are going to skin your knuckles and have to use small screw drivers to remove the speedo assembly, dash voltage regulator and various wires. Keep track of what you remove or get a copy of the wiring diagram. The regulator is a pain in the a.., and you may want to relocate it in a more convenient location under the dash or firewall. Good luck.

Checked the govenors today. They are ok. Checked the valves, they are okay. Tomorrow the trans gets pulled to check the converter. I'll post what the final correction is.

First time I took my caribbean for a ride after rebuilding the engine, I filled the tank ran about 50 miles and ran out of gas. I didn't have the proper carbs then and was using two carbs that were used on 400s. Since that time, I put on a single carb manifold and have doubled my mileage

Lots of good info here..One unanswered question is what is the easiest way to drain and refill the brake lines and master cylinder. Especially on my 55 Caribbean and Clipper?

55 Clipper I just bought as a parts car has no oil filter and no sign that there ever was one.

Re: 1955 400 Manual Transmission Conversion

The drive shafts are different beween ultramatic and standard or at least the u joints are. I did a mass swap out on my conversion. Had the rear end rebuilt and swapped it out, swapped drive shaft and had it rebuilt and balanced using new type u joints with zerk fittings, had the friction plate relined, rebuilt the pressure plate, new throw out bearing etc. Even swapped out the shift quadrant on the dash to the dummy plate used on the od trans. I suggest you use the 11 inch clutch used in the Custom or 400 as compared to the 10 1/2 used in the Super and Delux.
Since you have a 400, the extra 1/2 might be a good idea.
I was lucky, my donor was a Custom. I have the 372 56 engine in my Panama.

The conversion went pretty smooth. Only glitch was I was missing some linkage which I made from threaded rods. It was a very worth while conversion.
