Thanks to all you Guys - it is what I thought it was - but had to check as we do not use the term "Gravel Guard" over here in the U.K. I too think best to buy some appropriate "U" shape rubber and bond it into place.
Best regards Michael

Hubcaps on the 22nd Series

Can anyone tell me what the correct hubcap is for my car which is an early 1948 22nd Series Six Export Touring Sedan which was exported to S. Africa and is now residing in the UK and under full restoration.
The ones fitted are very plain - no hex. to the centre just an impressed circle painted the body colour - are these correct ? Also were ALL the wheels on the different models the same size/specification/hubcap fixings ? - because if so one could presumeably "upgrade" to caps with the Packard hex. and the legend "Packard Six" ? Once more going through the Steele Rubber Catalogue I have hit a snag as I do not understand what a "Rear Gravel to Bumper" rubber strip is or where it fits - also do I need one ? My car does not seem to have any rubber stripping at the rear anywhere near the bumper - HELP !!

Hood to Cowl seal 22nd Series

Trolling through my Steele Rubber Catalogue - as you do - I came across a seal stated to be for the 23rd Series ONLY.
I would like to know why one was not apparently fitted to the 22nd Series - were there complaints from owners that water was seeping into the engine bay ? I've updated my car details today as we are now progressing with the restoration at a speed just faster than STOP !! Best regards to everyone Michael

Hi again Robert - just reading through some other postings of yours and noticed you asked me about a heater.
Mine does not have one and it seems these were "optional Extras" - most of the S.African cars (RHD)I have come across don't seem to have ever been fitted with a heating/demisting unit. Bit of a problem to me living in the U.K where it seems it's always damp so a heater and particularly a demister is essential. I'm fitting a new unit when we get to that stage of the restoration. Best wishes Michael

Hi Robert
As usual late getting back to you. Yes the 752309 is stamped into the firewall - the number 2282-2016 was stamped into the plate on the opposite side on top of the firewall - I don't have any other numbers except the engine G1529 which I have only from the papers which came with the car - there is not a number stamped on the engine block or an engine plate. Any other queries please ask Best regards Michael

Steering wheels and Dashboards and window surrounds - 22nd Series
|
||||
---|---|---|---|---|
Home away from home

Does anyone know what the original colour of my steering wheel would have been - my car is a 1948 Export Six Touring Sedan and is currently painted the bodywork colour which I am sure is nowhere near correct ? On the other hand I have seen cream, red, black, blue and tan coloured steering wheels some of which have had the "knobbly" bit chromed (was this standard or done later ?) and others the colours I've mentioned.
My car is in full restoration over here in the U.K and I want it to look right. What is the correct colour for the dashboard ? - many are "mock" timber - what we call over here "graining" - others are the car colour or anything between black and cream. Lastly the window surrounds - many are grained - lots are chromed - some are painted the body colour others are painted another colour - which if any are correct ? Bet someone knows Best regards meaarch

Hi Fred
I'm disappointed that you have not had any EXACT feedback on the WHEELS you mention as I would like to know any problems etc. anyone has had fitting and or running on them - reason being they are an expensive item and I don't want to make a mistake by ordering them and later regretting same - costs to me would be inflated too as I am in the UK and shipping plus import costs can be considerable. By the way my car is a 1948 22nd Series Export Six and while a runner she needs and is shortly going to get a full restoration. Best regards Michael
