Re: Thoughts On Recruiting The Next Generation

Hey Guys,
I find this topic very interesting and important. Aside from the Packard aspect of it, it also speaks to a situation common throughout the classic car culture. I live in northern Minnesota and belong to a local car club here and we in the club are having a lot of the same conversations. Our club if made up mostly of muscle cars and street rods but there are also a few of us who are into restorations. I think that we are coming to the realization that we are going to have to embrace that most common of all things--CHANGE. We have been (passively I think) encouraging whatever younger people in the area that have any automotive interest to come to our cruise nights. And once in a while one or two will show up. However, and I think this is where we are shooting ourselves in the foot, we tend to ignore them because they are more interested in what they are more familiar with. They tend to drive the later model mustangs and other small cars that I think we don't show much appreciation for. Oh, they do like to come see these cool looking old machines that we drive but they don't seem to have much on a interest in having one of them themselves. I guess that I hope that someday they will develop more of a love for these vehichles we have, but, if not, I guess that is the way of life. It kind of reminds me of my grandpa they way he used to talk about a spirited horse he used to ride or the team he had in the field that could out pull any of the neighbors teams. What is that old saying, "the only think constant in life is change itself".

Thanks for the help. I hope to do a full freshening up of the engine compartment in another year or two and then I will get the Hirsch paint. However, the Krylon sounds like it may be just what I need to take care of my needs for now.
Thanks again,
Miles

I need to do some touchup painting on the engine in my 42 clipper. Can anyone tell me the color and or supplier of the correct paint. Also, is there a rattle can paint that is close. I am mostly working on the bottom of the engine so it may not show from the top anyway.
Thanks,
Miles

Thanks for all the info and help!! I managed to get mine out but it did not have tabs that get bent out. The cap has to rotate about 3/8" counterclockwise and then pull off. Unfortunately, having been in there for about 70 years, It did not rotate as it should have. I did manage to get it off with no real damage though. I have decided to replace mine with a rebuilt one from Max Merrit. Thanks again for the help,

Miles

How do I replace the coil on my 42 Clipper. It is the type that goes throught the firewall and has a heavy shielded cable that goes to the ignition switch. I don't see how these assemblies are supposed to come apart. Is the cap on the end of the coil supposed to slip off? I haven't been able to move mine. HELP!!!

Thanks,
Miles

Just to add a little. I have acquired a radio for my 42 clipper and it has the controls below the speaker. It looks like it will fit right in although I haven't actually installed it yet as it needs repairs. The ID tag on back says it is a Phillco P-4635. When you determine a price for yours, I may be interested in it as I need at least parts for mine or mine may be good for parts for yours.

you may also want to try SKIRTS AND VISORS.COM
I bought a set there for my 42 clipper and was pleased with price and quality. They make them per order so it may take a while to get them.

That is indeed a very nice find. It is also very similar to my car. One difference that sticks out right away is that the horizontal grill bars on my car stop at the outside of the headlights instead of wraping around the front fender. As I said earlier, the VN on mine is 1585-3139. According to the model info, mine is the "110 6 Special Club Sedan". I would make note also that the 1505 in the film is listed in the model info as a "110 6 Custom Club Sedan" rather that the "Custom Club Coupe" as it is labeled in the film. I have noticed that the fastback design like mine tends to be labeled as a "sedan" rather than a "coupe". Anyway, I think that I just said almost everything I know about Packard's.
Thanks guys, This has been interesting and enjoyable.

Unfortunately, I do not have a photo of the car that I can post at this time. However, my car says "Clipper" on the side, Is of the fastback styling, and is the same car as is in the Photo Archive described as a Clipper Special Club Sedan. I refer to the car as a "110 6 Special Club Sedan" because that is the way the 1585 model is named in the "Packard Model Info". I have to say that to me, the model naming of these cars is somewhat confusing. I hope this helps in determining what this car is.
Thanks for the help,
Miles (crotomac)
