Re: Instrument Voltage Regulator

Eugene Wescott
Kevin,

When I looked in the Service Manual on Page 6, Accessories, it shows the capacitor, not condenser as I had mentioned, attached to the Ign side of the IVR. I'll take it off and test it with a lead directly from the battery and see what I get for a reading.

Thanks
Gene

If that's the one the poster had for sale @ $60k, it doesn't appear to be strictly stock--hope he found a buyer. Not sure even your parts would fit it anymore.

The fellow standing next to it reminds me of the senior member of a family that has(had) a TV show where they build custom motorcycles. Always yelling at someone, kicking holes in something & slamming doors. He's got that "come touch this car & I'll unscrew your head" look.

A while back I read a magazine interview with a Mr. McKellar who was in charge of designing the Pontiac V8. One of the questions they asked was whether the rumor was true, that the Pontiac head was copied off the Packard or vice versa?(snip)

I asked the same question to Pete McCarthy, except using the John Delorean connection of working for Packard 1949-52 and then Pontiac 1952+. The answer eventually came back that there was no (admitted) connection between developments.

The configuration of the engines do have many similarities giving rise to asking the question in the first place. However, there are also several significant differences, so my opinion at this point is that there was no cross pollination.

Geez, how many disclaimers do I have to put on a post without it resulting in all this scolding? I mean, I cited the source as a post ("buyer beware") and only continued on the what-if idea to stimulate some "interesting reading" like Owen points out could be the result. If there isn't someone saying "what if" there are a whole lot of discoveries that won't be made, like "what if" the earth was not the center of the universe?

I was hoping, also, that Craig, who has a lot of info and even a cutaway diagram of the old "W" Chevy, and may have more on the later BB would chime in here. Not that input is not welcome from everyone.

It's just that speculation that is not presented as fact should rightly be accepted as such--speculation, and even contrary speculation is still just speculation without some backing information.

I agree you'd think, but can we all be positive that nothing has, or nothing remains to be surfaced?

Jeff,

The stories behind and about our Packards are fascinating and I encourage you to share them with us. Now if you want something really 'winding and lengthy' you need look no further than the Project Blogs here including mine. I for one look forward to reading about yours.
