Re: Master Cylinder upgrade

Thanks HH56,
This is going to be the toughest part of this project. I'm slowly running out of money and ideas. I definitely want to go the safest route possible. All while spending the least amount of money. Craig's conversion seems to be the easiest. And i'm not all that worried about keeping it "stock" in appearance. That's probably the way I will go; but I plan on Keeping all four drums.

Master Cylinder upgrade

Hey guys,

My Bendix treadle vac is in pretty rough shape. The master cylinder is chipped around the reservoir, and there is part of a bolt stuck in it as well. I wanted to know if anyone has done an upgrade to a different master cylinder/power booster that fits. I've seen that kanters has a kit to overhaul your brakes with a modern master cylinder. Where can I get a master cylinder that fits and is ready to go for my '52 200 deluxe touring sedan?

My #1 exhaust valve sticks, if those are missing would it cause that to happen? Or would it probably be a dirty/seized valve guide?

Got my oil pan off, and as you can see there was a lot of sludge waiting to see me. When I was cleaning out that sludge I came across a few bits of metal. I'm not sure where they are from so I got a picture of them. Can someone let me know what these are?

Good news, got the starter to turn just a little bit. Made a better ground and used some thicker gauge wire. Next step; I am going to buy new brushes and bushings to see if I can't finally get this car started!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Tim,
Thank you for lending a helping hand. I will definitely try the tests you mentioned to me. This starter has been giving me fits. Just when I thought I might be able to get this baby started, the starter doesn't want to crank. Ehh, So is the life of having an old car.

Re: Thoughts On Recruiting The Next Generation

When I was younger I absolutely loved cars. "Car" was my first word according to my parents. I would name every car we passed by on the road. The only toys I ever wanted had wheels. Hotwheels and matchbox cars were my toy of choice. Here I am; now 18 years old, and that passion and love for things old and automotive related has only grown. The car that was going to be handed down to me; a 1990 mustang lx, was totaled by my father. I look at it now, and i'm glad that happened. It was that eye opening experience that led me to my 1952 200 deluxe touring sedan. It was bought with my hard earned money and is being restored with my own hands and paychecks. I think the future is bright for old cars; Packards especially. My friends had no idea what a Packard was, and instantly they were interested in it. Where did it come from? What does it look like? I haven't driven a foot in my first car, which is frustrating to say the least, but the beauty and craftsmanship of that automobile drives me forward to keep working at it so she can take me back to a simpler time.

Hey packardguy53,
I took the battery to get it checked a while back. The test showed it was a good battery. The only thing was it needed to be charged for a little while. The cold cranking amps were down a bit; but I wasn't able to get the reading on the specific gravity. If nothing else I'll go to an auto parts store and try bench test on a battery I know is good.

Hey Jason,
Yeah, I tried the test you mentioned and I saw no arcing, nor heard sparking. I used a little jumper wire to go across each slot on the commutator with no signs of a short. What could it be!?!?! I also tried bypassing the solenoid with no luck. Not a sound came from the starter when I attempted that.

Hi Jason,

I had preformed a bench test with no luck. The only thing I could get out of my starter was a buzzing sound coming from the solenoid. No rotation from the armature or any signs it even wanted to turn. The current read from the battery was 6.43v and dropped to 2.92v when I attempted to crank it. As far as the test you said I should preform, does it matter where I ground the armature i.e. the front where it rides in the bushing or back towards the bendix?

-Thank you,
Garrett
