Re: Starter won't crank

yeah... I'm starting to think i'm gonna have to take this starter to a generator shop. With the tools I have i'm pretty sure I won't be able to properly repair it. I'll go out and give the windings around the commutator a look over. And that coating on the windings has really chipped and flaked off. Luckily in San Antonio there is no shortage of shops; the hard part is trying to find a trustworthy one.

The field windings were a bit nasty looking. I want to say that spot was just wet from electrical cleaner or greasy. There are bare spots on the field winding insulation where it looks like the armature may have made contact as you can see from the chips on the armature near the field poles. I had the battery checked at advance auto parts, and my cold cranking amps were way down, but everything else seemed to check out fine. So for now I am going to leave it on trickle for 24 hours and try one more time. If the same results occur I can point to the starter as the culprit.

I'm going to get my battery load tested. The battery fell over and lost some electrolyte a while back. When I took the starter apart I didn't find anything too noticeably wrong with it. I cleaned her out, threw her back together, and still haven't gotten anything out of her. Would bench testing the starter with a 12V do any harm to my starter?

Due to the lack of daylight I wasn't able to completely tear into the starter. This is the first time I've ever tried to engage this starter. I assume it has sat for 40 years with out being run. The battery was purchased back in June, but has seldom been used. When I first attempted to crank the starter in the car the voltage dropped down to about 3.19 volts. Once taken out of the car it popped back up to 5.91 volts. Also, i'm not sure if the battery cables have been changed; what should the resistance be on both cables? I will update you on the status of what I find in my starter, and try to get some photos while i'm at it.

Thank you,
-Garrett

Alright... I ordered a new solenoid from NAPA since one of the terminals on the old one broke off due to age. I installed it today and put my battery on trickle charge. The voltage read on the battery was about 6.36 volts. Hooked her up and all I got was a "buzzing" noise. From there I removed the starter and decided to clean and paint it, and preform a bench test. What I got were the same results; no actuating of the pinion gear and more buzzing. I have not torn into the starter yet, but has anyone had these symptoms before? If so, what did you have to do to fix it? I've never rebuilt a starter before, but i'm definitely not afraid to try if that's the only option.

Thanks HH56, I see "70-10 ohms" on summitracing.com. Would that be enough to cut it?

Hey guys,
After removing my fuel tank a while back to wire up the sending unit, I was greeted by rust that had chewed up the top of my tank. When I removed the sending unit, part of the tank came with it. Let's just say my budget is tight and repairing this tank would be costly. I found a fuel cell on JEGS for roughly $170.00. I know you probably wouldn't recommend me doing this, but I really need to get this old gal running soon. This is my first and only car so far and I intend she's going to be a daily driver. I'm not going to chunk the old tank. It will be repaired later on down the road. I wanted to know if a GM style sending unit "0-90 ohm" can be wired in place of the existing sending unit and read on the old gauge.

Thank you,
GearRat

Hey Ross,
No as of now I still have yet to start it or even get the starter to crank. I will need to pick up a new solenoid. The terminal that leads to the carb switch was completely glazed over and snapped right off with the slightest turn of a wrench. And yes, the head has been off. I media blasted it, cleaned out the water passages, and gave her a fresh coat of paint. So hopefully I can get her started up here soon.

Sorry, here are the before photos. And the broken tail light lens above is a result from a friend's car. He was helping me move it so I could have a cement slab poured to be able to finish this project. If anyone has an extra i'm certainly in need of one.

It's been a while since I've last posted. I thought I would update you all on the little progress I have made. I'm currently working on rewiring the entire car. There are very few things left to be wired like, the fuel sending unit, back up lights, and steering column. Oh, and if anyone can fill me in on how to remove the horn button so I can pull the steering wheel that would be great. It's been really motivating to see things come to life after an assumed 40 years. One thing I've been dying to hear is the horn, but the only thing I can seem to get out of it is a "click" noise from the horn relay. And with that I assume the culprit is the relay. Anyways, I have some photos posted below of what's been done thus far.
