Re: what oil should I use in my 53 Clipper?

the main problem might not be the viscosity but the quality. Modern oils do often have dispergent additives that keep the dirt in motion to move it to the oil-filter. But if you don?t have any oil-filter, the dirt will circulate round and round and help wearing out the engine. This old engines should use an old fashioned oil for classic cars, where the dirt sinks down in the oil pan.

this might be an option in your southern state, but my only hope is global warming... its quite cold here and my engine should not run cold for a long time. The thermostat was made to minimize the warming up time.

If you have issues with overheating the first suspect is the radiator. American cooling systems do not close the direct way to the water pump when opening the way to the radiator (compare double thermostat of the Mercedes shown above). The water takes the easiest way and if the radiator is only a bit dirty inside, the water will not pass it and take the direkt way.

a 7 lbs cap is on it and a spare one was on my order at rockauto... incredible cheap for 2,60 $ ... and the 1,64 $ thermostat is not fitting in the outlet... it is fiddeling (no mater trowing it in some box in the garage)

hope original thermostat is available, there was no price

hi cooling experts,

when I bought my car, the thermostat housing was leaky and when I did remove it, there was nothing in it. I ordered a thermostat at Rockauto (very cheap, but they do not realy know what they offer) and the classical small thermostat arrived. It is too small to be fixed, it would fall into the head. I?m about to make an adaptor plate from a 1980ies Mercedes therostat insert wich fits into the head pefectly from the diameter (but is too high to be used in function).

Does anyone know a better replacement?

cool greatings
Michael

in case anyone comes to this thread whilst searching "distributor" I recommend, that when it is out (very easy job), the grease under the cap on its side should totally be cleaned out and refreshed and the typical service done to the rest. With a litle cleaning up, it looks like new and perhaps will work better!

thats an interesting information, can anybody tell wether 288engine H 200799 does have hydraulic liters? this would avoid opening the eingines right side wich is not very accessable and in oilproof state at this time.

I?m just doing a full service and thougt about gapping the valves.

on my 49 deluxe eight 2362 there was a small round thing with even a smaller wire mesh on the top. only a single stripe of metal holds it to the head. see pics below. The manual mentiond the oil bath type as an option.
