You state that you will have the trans will be installed and ask if harm will be done if you don't install "all those extra parts".

Well, if you don't install "all those extra (and necessary) parts" you cannot operate the OD

s the most likely answer, from "The Old Motor"


"The Packard's coachwork is quite unusual, attractive and rare - we would like you to tell us, which coachbuilding company constructed the body and also what series the chassis it is on and the approximate year it was built. The photo, taken in 1929, is courtesy of reader William Simpson, and it shows his father and his new bride Helen in front of her house. He wrote: "My father was a car nut, and always had a Cadillac in his later years, but I'm not sure if this is one. His idea of a relaxing time was to go out to the garage (where we had a hoist) and do a valve job.


Update - Readers that have comented all agree that this Packard is a third series (mid-1917 to early 1923) Packard Twin Six. As to the coachbuilder that constructed the body, both Don Lee and Fleetwood have been identified as possibilities."

With the poster saying the photo was taken in Bakersfield CA and my knowledge of coachwork, it's by Don Lee of Los Angeles

Loc-Tite wasn't invented in 1940 and Packards and all other cars did not have a problem with torqued and lockwashered bolts backing out. If there were a problem the bolts would have had bend-over retainers. True, Loctite of any type will not hurt but it will not help either.

Nobody suggests Loctite on water pump or cylinder head nuts.

Hey guys, get with it and don't stay stuck in old technology. I have an app on my phone that operates a suction pump, I can empty the canister while I'm on my boat or flying to Rio

We use wahtever fluid we have on the shelf for our 50's GM HYdramatics, 50's Torqueflites , Ultramatics, 95 Suburban or 2005 Mopar.

Never heard of a failure or poor performance from using the "wrong" fluid

The term "short work" means to me that it was ruined. The ax made short work of the tree, the hammer made short work of the chain. Thus I concluded that the fluid ruined the greasy engine parts by rusting them.

A clearer description such as "the fluid dissolved the grease on the engine parts" would leave no space fro confusion.

To tighten the upper bolts it is necessary on many makes and models to rotate the engine
