Heater core rebuild questions
#61
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

Brandon
First off sorry to start another thread about this. I'm posting from my phone and I can't find the previous one.

It took me a few months to get the darn thing almost done, and now I can't find the little latch that holds the control cable to the core. And I was wondering if anybody knew where to get one. I know I had it but I've been looking for two weeks straight now, and winter is coming, so I really need to get some coolant back in it. I'm pretty sure I've had the system open to air for far too long.

Also if I wanted to flush the core could I do it with metal ready? Asuming I rinse it well.

Also off topic I spotted a white 55 (I think based on the headlights) patrician in a lot by the Ross island bridge in Portland. It was behind a fence so I couldn't get a real good look at it, but it didn't look in to bad of shape.

But atleast we know there's another v8 out there that's not destroyed completly.

Advice for Checking Out Sitting Cars

I wasn't sure if there was a thread for this already but, what would be your points of interest for maintenance, wear, or body/ structural problems. When purchasing a new packard for restoration that has been sitting, or for those who have just gotten them home.

Hey everyone, thanks for the great response, sorry I didn't post back sooner. My phone broke and it's the only source of Internet I've got at the moment.

As far as the what carb I'm receiving is, as I was told sound more like the edlebrock 600cfm mentioned above. The original post I made was based off of what I was told by the guy I'm getting it from. And as far as I know it's barely used.

I'm pretty sure anything I throw on there will be better than the Rochester currently on it. Considering it's not the original carb to my car. I made the mistake of selling that one when I was younger. And the one on it was an eBay carb that I'm also improperly rebuilt. And again when I rebuilt it due to lack of tools. I can't get ahold of the guy right now but when I do I'll try and post a part number for it.

Is the original air cleaner going to fit under the hood if I use a spacer?
And am I better off with a spacer than boring the manifold?

I would love to stick with the original, but I'm tryin to work with stuff that I'm getting free. I'm definatly going to save the old one for the future. But will anything else fit?

hi everyone I just had a quick question,

What do I need to know to put a different carb on my 56 patrician?

Such as what is the bore, was the manifold specific to packard?

The reason I'm asking is my girlfriends dad has a Edlebrock Thunder 650 doublepump carb he wants to give me tomorrow, but he doesn't know Packards

And if that one won't fit on what will?

Very nice, I just took mine off about a week ago, and everything looks alright. However the flap that either blocks or let's air through is a little shady looking. The rubber around the edges of it is fubar, and I was wondering if anyone knew if there was something that I could replace it with. It looks like you can take it apart considering its just stapled in.

Ok so the numbers on the top of the block and on the door pillar are both 5682-4487 so I'm pretty sure its the original. So it should be bronze then? And on to the next part of the question what is the best brand to use or better yet what holds up the best? Ie plasticote, Por15?

I just figure since im not going to pull it out for a long time that, i would like it to match, but when i do i know for sure it will be bronze. And i havev know idea why or who painted it red, I thought it was kind of wierd, especially that bright red you usually see on the OUTSIDE of an 80's chevy or something.

But, its numbers do match my car so...

Engine Paint Recomendation

I cant remember if i had told everyone that my engine was the original, somebody had just decided to paint it red for some reason.

Anyway since my Patrician only has 86k on it, i dont plan on rebuilding the block for a while, but i want to keep it looking nice until then. Ill probably keep it red untill its rebuilt as well, then ill repaint it to original.

Ive got my heater core off, and im getting ready to pull the manifold, and the valve covers, but i have almost no idea what to paint them with. And do i try and cover the inside of them or will that just flake off and cause problems.

I started the heater core with that Plasticote Engine enamel, but im not so sure its very good. That stuff seems so soft.

Also what is a favorite parts wash arund here?

I went to Baxter and found a sender made by Standard, part number TS4.SMP which fits threadwise but I haven't gotten a chance to measure its range. It does happen to be for 70's vehicles but I didn't get much more info out of em. I'll let u guys know what it reads when I find my meters.
