Yes the welder I have is a mechanical genius. He told me he had to make 2 dies one for the running board contour & one for the mounting brackets. He is a full time worker & does this in his home shop. The guy is great and he will be doing the inner fender to body rebuilding when I get to that too. I will post more pics as they progress. Hopefully soon they will be on their way to Hunley.

Next pieces to go to the welder are the side splasher panels from the engine compartment. I was able to get the a copy of the original drawings from the archive vault at the museum. Now to get them back in original design. That is the project.

I will be looking for a good picture of the piece screwed to the radiator frame to get that in order too. That flimsy one with the tab mountings. Mine was cobbled at the bends and took a little straightening out, then that will get blasted and powder coated.

Does anybody have/know the maximum diameter of the brake drums. I will be sending those out shortly also.

Talk with you all again soon.

Hey folks it is about time I returned to the forum. Awhile back I posted pic of my running boards for comparison to another blogger. Attached are some pics of the welding and rework process. "I HOPE" I had to have a few dies made for the attaching plates and the other piece probably a stiffener. After all the welding and straightening is completed off to the powder coater, hopefully my other pieces will be finished. The radiator shell and other small items are there presently.

Later folks

Thanks Rich for the observation. The pages I photographed were not from the parts manual you mentioned. Yes I also have that parts book. I have a preliminary 1940 Parts book that I used for the reference. I have been told by some that the book isn't of much value since it is for a specific year. I have used it numerous times to help with passing information about the 1940 Packards. Thanks again for the observation.

I have some info to offer, I hope this helps. I got these from a preliminary parts book for 1940. If I ever find out how to scan and clean up the pages I would someday like to reproduce the book in its entirety.

I would like to add a little further information about the bumper brackets. I found in the 1940 Preliminary parts list the PN for the 1800-1801 inner is 341755, and the number for the rivets is 324197, 4 ea. 3/8 dia. but no length. Wish it was more help.

Good luck

There is a picture of my data plate on the registry if that helps. My 120 was a local delivery also. I would attach a copy of the picture if I could.

Thank you to both Howard & O.D. The hobby and the Packard fans owe both of you for you time and effort to help.

And also hope everyone, and their families, has a Happy Holiday season and a safe and prosperous New Year.

Thank you both for everything.

More pictures hopefully in the future. As they go through the process. I think it will be awhile since some of the mounting brackets will need to be formed as well.

Here are a few pics of my running boards during the rubber removal stage. These are from my 1940-120, however it is an early one titled as a 39. They are in the process of getting ready for a trip to Hunley's facility. I will need some major rework before that happens, I discover a few rusted through areas after having the first one blasted.

On that note if anybody has a real junk running board that can be cut up rather than reforming the ridges let me know.

One picture shows some of the original coating and the other shows the labor intense removal in process.

Anyone ever use PPG paint product ALK200
#70
Home away from home

1940-120
Hello all Packard enthusiasts, I would like some input, if anyone has any concerning a PPG product called ALK-200. I have read the tech data sheets and have calculated the mixing formulas, and was wondering if anyone has used this product for restoring a Packard chassis and other parts that require a lower gloss finish than out of the can use.

I will also be using the DX-10-FLT to bring down the gloss to the level desired also using the ALK-201 Polyurethane enhancer, AKA hardener.

Any knowledge or experience would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you Fred D
