Re: Radial or Bias Ply Tires???

Keep in mind, I don't go to shows and judged events. I drive my cars, and radial tires make a BIG difference. My '52 Mayfair had bias plys on it when it was purchased and it actually jumped from side to side. Without any suspension changes, the radials made this car driveable...you don't even need to hold the steering wheel now and it goes so straight as an arrow. My '41 Clipper is now fitted with Diamondback WW radials too, and they actually look like the old bias plys. My grandkids travel in my old cars with me quite often and I consider radial tires as safety equipment...like seat belts!

The old Fords and the car hauler they were in were all recovered the next day in east Detroit in a vacant lot. The pick-up the family used to pull the rig was gone however....

I had a very high quality local shop (owner had Model A's) do one for a '54 Clipper a few years ago and it ran a little over $400. Now the honeycomb radiator for our '27 Pontiac was another story! OUCH!!

Massey Ferguson engine gray is the PERFECT match. They have two colors, so get the lighter one. Pick it up at your local MF dealership and save the terrible shipping costs too....

Excellent advise by all. Better let the Ultramatic do its thing in its own time!

My '52 Mayfair is set up that way and I average about 15 mpg on good days touring. I have a light foot and rarely go over 55.

AND you're going to find it's easier and cheaper to fix. I replaced a waterpump in my '54 Clipper (I later sold it) in about a half hour costing $95 a few years ago. About the same time the waterpump in my wife's late model Cadillac went out and the dealer charged over $500...the engine had to be lifted off the engine mounts to get to it! MODERN stuff @#$&%.

Sounds like a good buy to me...original engine/tranny or not, but I'd offer him $2500.
That is a sweet model when finished correctly. It should not be too hard to find a 6 for it, and equipted with an overdrive, it'll go zoom.....!
