Re: Packards & the Younger Generation

ClipBee-

Sadly, this is a common feeling among ALL marque specific clubs. The cruiser type everybody inclusive clubs are very accepting of youth. I am involved in a local marque specific club that can get outright nasty sometimes to new comers, youth, and modified cars. We had an international convention in 2005, and I got all my local club buddies with modified cars to enter the show and we all got thrown back next to a brick wall, away from all the other cars and told "we would not be judged, just displayed" & "how could we judge cars that we don't understand?". What the clubs don't understand is without a younger generation keeping the flame alive, it will go out. The only cars you will see are museum cars that haven't run in years. I am 31 now, and hoping I will still see packards on the road for years to come.

but.....I don't want packard34 to think he will be run off. Be proud that you have a great car like a Packard. There is a long tradition of packard ownership represented on this site and while there are some sticklers, know that we look forward to you working on & enjoying your packard 30 years after we are all dead.

Mathew-

Again, welcome to this great site.

I find it great that you have found a Packard at such a young age. The knowledge you will gain from owning an old car will be worth more than the car itself. Not only will your car stand out among the rows & rows of Brand X you will have the satisfaction of knowing you had to do 3 times of much work to get yours into top shape.

My first old car was a '64 Thunderbird I pulled out of the weeds when I was 15. While I was constantly working on this car, my friends were playing nintendo, computer games and waxing their Hondas,Mustangs,& toyota trucks (this was 1992). They gave my car nicknames like "Plunder-turd" & "Gramps". By my junior year of high school, I had learned so much from my car. Mechanical theory, vacuum, body & paint, and lots of patience. All my friends learned was that turtle wax leaves crusty white gunk on a honda that you dig out with a toothbrush & if we ever end up in a video game world, they could defeat anyone.

I got my first packard when I was 23, and it taught me alot as well. You have chosen a hobby that will pay you back in much more than money. Be sure to post your car in the owner registry, and get some pictures up.

This car was sold on ebay about a week ago for something like 36,000 I think. Looks like either the winning bidder backed out, or this is a fake ebay listing. The original auction had alot more pictures. Also the original seller has been selling alot of '55-'56 packards lately, a 400, a patrician 4 door and I think a panama within the last 2 months with different ebay ID's. All in southern California. Odd.

Could it be a rear antenna cable clip used to keep the antenna cable up off the trunk floor? Just a guess.

MORE HORSEPOWER!!!

This has been a rift in the mobile community since transportation had wooden wheels, and the # of horsepower was measured by how many horses were in front of the wagon. Lets just take it easy on the personal attacks.....we are all friends here..... we are all members of the fine packard tradition of ownership. Remember, the theories introduced in these posts are from experience, or good technical reasoning. I enjoy all the ideas discussed, because aren't we all just trying to keep as many Packards on the road as possible?

Turbopackman- That Youtube post is AWESOME!!!

'55 autronic eye system

I posted a picture of my dash in my project a few weeks ago that started a discussion about the autronic eye system in my '55 400. Here are some pics. Is this a factory system or aftermarket? The dash bezel seems to match the rest of the letter type. Any ideas?

I have some pics of the '55 352 w/tranny I found locally.
You can see how complete it is. I have the fan pulley, fan blades,& starter in the cab of the truck. I've been so busy, I haven't even taken it out of the truck yet. I think this weekend I'll have it in my shop.

Hello Drake,

Nice to find another packard-bro locally!
I guess we need to start a local packard club called the "mossy back Packard club" or maybe "Damp & Wet Packard club".

I took a look at the pics of your packard. It looks pretty nice. I sympathize with your comment on working on your project between the raindrops, hale, snowflakes and occasional Sun. I have friends in the great white north (British Columbia Canada) who can't even work on their cars without a blowtorch & an ice pick! I suddenly don't feel so terrible about cold hale going down my neck

Have you found any local wrecking yards with any packards? All american classics in Vancouver has anything you would want for any car ever EXCEPT Packards. Its frustrating.

Maybe we'll be at a show some day with our packards, look forward to seeing your car progress on your forum link.
