Re: CLEANING PAN OF SEDIMENT UPON PURCHASE

Hope you find the valve missing its keeper!
Hate to see that valve stuck in a piston, putting a grove in the cylinder wall!
We used to use kerosene to clean the oil mud out off these engines.
Probably can't purchase kerosene anymore.
We once had a beautiful 1967 Chevelle Malibu hardtop owned by a sweet little old lady.
Problem with her car was, she never changed her oil, never!
When we took the valve cover off, you could not see the rocker assembly!
They were completely covered in that black muck, as well as the whole engine.
Good luck with the clean out, be patient and get her clean and you'll have a sweet running motor.

Ok, I will give it a go for you and post what I find. Also will get DuPont's info number. I think DuPont has spun off their automotive paint division.
Think the new company is called Exalta or something like that.
Will post what I find.

Duh, why something so simple escaped me!
Brain cells were inactive is my only defense.

I can find the DuPont numbers for you next time I go to town,
My local mom and pop auto supply store has been selling DuPont auto paint since 1948.
Now bare in mind the numbers I can get are from the 1955 DuPont paint chip books.
Don't know if the numbers will be of any use anymore but worth a try if you want me to look.
Just let me know and I will do it for you.
Bill

I agree with Ross. I've seen the Kanter rubber mats and they look much more Packard like.

Thanks Howard,
I don't know much of the car's early history.
When I got the car it was from a salvage yard.
Wasn't in too bad of condition other than a missing radiator.
The car had last been registered in 1965, I imagine the reason it was retired was the parking issue. Otherwise after changing oil, buying a used radiator, cleaning fuel system, adding a battery, car started right up!
Maybe the previous owner didn't bother with "recalls"?
The local Packard dealer was still in business in 1965 selling British Motor Corp vehicles.

1955 Packard 400 Question
#87

Bill Clay
When I had my 1955 Packard 400 it had an interesting problem.
Perhaps a 55-56 Packard guru could answer my question.
Okay, 1955 Packard 400 , V8, Ultramatic, 2 door hardtop. Power windows and power seat.
When I would park this car on an incline, nose pointed up, put in park and there it would stay. You couldn't get the gear selector back out of park position. I would have to get a friend to push on the rear bumper ever so slightly in order to select another gear be it drive or reverse.
I suspect perhaps the engine and transmission mounts we shot causing a shifting problem?

Both the too fast and the too slow drivers cause the accidents!

Thank you, it must have been the Packard Farm I dealt with!
I remember the parts supplier being in Massachusetts.
Sorry to learn of his passing and dire condition at that time.
Thought something must have happened as I haven't heard anything about him for years.
