Is the vacuum advance still connected?I have the same car as you and disconnecting the advance line and plugging the fitting at the carbureator could be some help.Sometimes its hard to distinguish between a fuel supply problem and a sluggish vacuum advance.Easy to do and evaluate the result. good luck.Bear

have you done a compression check.low compression can contribute to your problem. However,I think the advice you got about timing is much more likely to solve the problem . Good luck!

valve stem clips

Just finished getting all the valve stem clips seated after a valve job on my 49 288.This was a difficult and frustrating job, even though I used all the tricks (dab of grease, mirror etc). Can anyone share an easy way to do this short of pulling the engine?

does anyone have a trick for installing valve stem clips when the engine is still in the car? Working upside down they keep falling out after I seat them when i take the tension off the valve compressor. its a 288 1949

288 valve covers

Here we go again with another stupid question. When installing the valve covers on a 288,do the splash fins go toward the top or bottom?I didnt match mark them, and after bead blast and paint they could go either way because of symmetry. The front and back are easily identified because of the vent tube spigot, but they can still go either way on the block.
