does anyone have a trick for installing valve stem clips when the engine is still in the car? Working upside down they keep falling out after I seat them when i take the tension off the valve compressor. its a 288 1949

Put a small dab of grease inside them to "stick" them to the valve stem. Old time mechanics trick that's been working like a charm for over a century.

As Dave (Owen_Dyneto) said, a tiny dab of grease will act as a glue to keep them in place and that’s what I’ve been doing since I rebuilt my first Packard engine as a teenager in the ‘60s.
