The '37 120 just sold for $56k; fully $4k less than the April top bid. Buyer got a really good deal, I think.

Hi Duncan Michael: Yes, I have seen this car and have posted it to this site under another link (Packards for sale on Bringatrailer.com). There is also a very nice '40 120 Club Coupe now listed on this auction site. Both are nice cars.

I really want to sell my '39 Six and buy a really nice 1938 or 1939 120. I have my '39 up for sale on this site, but so far, no interest. Disappointing. Come on, guys, it's not that bad a car.

Would not mind a '37 or earlier. There is a very nice '37 115C Convertible Coupe up for sale right now in Hemmings that is not too far away (Massachusetts). I'd be interested if I had my car sold. But I really can't get another car unless I sell mine first. Willing to make someone a deal.

Bob J: Wow! Your Packard is just stunning. What a transformation from what you started with. You should be very proud of your accomplishment.

I'm not sure what a fair value would be for that 1942 110, but the values for the 1938 and later junior Packard convertibles are substantially below those for the 1935-1937 models. These have always been considered the most desirable years, particularly the 1937's. I can't tell you how many times I have been asked if I knew of a 1937 120 Convertible Coupe for sale like yours. Just about every Packard guy I know holds this model in particularly esteem. The '35-'37 model years are like the so-called "Tri-Fives" of '55-'57's in the Chevy world.

I personally know of only one other '42 110 convertible coupe. This particular car belonged to a long-time member of my former Packard club (The Eastern Packard Club) from Connecticut. He owned this car for many years until his death several years ago at age 100. It had been given a full cosmetic restoration and was painted Packard Cream. Interesting car, as the data plate indicated a delivery date of December 8, 1941, the day after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Imagine the original owner of that car going to the dealership on that day to pick it up for the first time. I always wondered if he might have tuned in to hear President Roosevelt's "Day of Infamy" speech on the radio on the way home. Anyway, that car sold a few years ago for around $40K as I was told. It was a beautiful car, but it had been sitting for a couple of years while the estate was going through probate and had some mechanical issues. Still, it is going to take a tremendous effort to make the Facebook car as nice as that one. From a dollars and cents standpoint, it's not going to be worth it, even if you could do most of the work yourself, but such a historic vehicle should be saved. I hope that someone rescues it which is why I posted the ad on this site. Not many Packards rarer than this one.

The 1949 sedan was a no-sale at $15,500. Reserve was not met. It is now up for sale on LA Craigslist with an asking price of $21,500. Think this is a bit much for a 22nd series Standard Eight sedan. This car is admittedly quite nice, but I'm just put off by the non-authentic white roof. I think is makes the car look like a taxicab:

There are two more Packards on BringaTrailer today, a 1937 120 Convertible Coupe and a 1940 120 Club Coupe. The '37 was on this site previously this past April and got a high bid of $60,120. It looks like a nice car but has some serious paint issues. Cracks everywhere, particularly around the rumble seat area. It is an older restoration which has obviously been toured extensively.

The 1940 120 Coupe is a very good driver quality restoration with an exceptionally nice interior. Undercarriage and engine bay are a bit grungy, but it looks great topside and appears very sharp in the dark red color (Laguna Maroon)

Well, the cars are real. Although I did not go to the public viewing for the Phase 1 auction in November 2021, I did download and save the auction catalog. I was able to find all of these cars and their lot number, along with the sale price. I can confirm that they were all purchased by the same individual, though I don't know his identity, only his user name for the online auction. Still, it does seem strange that you cannot contact him.

Agree. Very strange that you cannot get in touch with the seller. These ads were all posted on FB quite recently.

This individual bought several cars at the C.Louis Ablelove auctions, apparently with the intention of flipping them for a profit. But I think he may have gotten in over his head. These are all rough project cars and will be a hard sell. He could end up sitting these for months or even years. And probably not much profit potential, especially when you factor in the high auction commissions.

Alan apparently posted this car on LA Craigslist. Here is a link to the ad:

https://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/cto/d/riverside-1953-packard-convertible/7685153884.html

This does look like a pretty good deal for $5K. I've seen worse advertised for much more money. It does need a lot of work, but coming from CT myself, you can't beat West Coast sheet metal. Unrestored convertibles from around here are typically rusted into the earth.

Looking at the shot of the data plate, it appears that the original color of this car was Scheme "B" which was Meridian Blue Metallic, a dark blue shade. Would look nice restored in its original color. The car was apparently repainted a bright red color which looks good in the photos, but this is not a '53 Packard factory color. The closest was Matador Maroon (Scheme U), a dark maroon color.

Leedy: You are correct. The gentleman was C. Louis Ablelove, not Lewis. My mistake.

I do hope that at least some of these cars get saved. Unfortunately, many of the cars in the collection were extremely rough. I did not attend Phase 1 in person but know someone who did. He described standing inside the trunk area of one of the Caribbeans. There was no trunk pan left at all, so he was actually standing on the floor of the warehouse. I did go to Phase 2 in April of last year because I wanted to bid on the 1937 120 Convertible Coupe and did not want to risk bidding sight unseen. The car just needed too much work and had not run in years. I was surprised when it hammered for over $52K. With a 22% commission, I just didn't think it was worth this much, especially for a non-runner with obvious cosmetic issues like badly cracked paint and dull, oxidized chrome. In person, the car did not compare favorably to the auction catalog photos which had been taken in a dark warehouse. But it was quite an experience to see all those unrestored Packards in one place. Some of the cars were actually pretty nice. There was an exceptional original '54 Caribbean which looked stunning in Polaris Blue over Packard Ivory. This car, Lot #9 brought a winning bid of $20K. I think it was the best Caribbean in the collection. It would not take too much of an effort to restore this one.

Here are some photos I took of this car at the auction. Even though I prefer prewar Packards, I liked this one so much that I'd consider trading my '39 for it.
