no lights, keeps blowing fuse at headlight switch

hey all,
car is a 54 clipper deluxe that was converted to 12 volt before i got it. 2 days ago all the lights and everything worked, but now when i go to turn on the lights, it blows the fuse at the headlight switch. when i replace the fuse, the lights only come on for a couple seconds then they die, because of a blown fuse. where should i start checking? i cant verify the age of the switch, but the wiring connections look modern with newer terminals at the ends of the wires, also the bulbs were replaced..as i said the lights did work a couple days ago.
we have had a lot of rain recently in florida..is something shorting out?
i still have stop lights when i step on the brake pedal, no signals tho....signals did work 2 days ago, car has a modern flasher relay installed
all wires to the bulbs are original, and still wrapped...
any help is appreciated.
thanks

Thanks! Forgot about there being a dipstick there. I will see if it's convenient. I was thinking of making a small panel just held with a couple screws that I could remove if absolutely needed. I'll see what I come up with.

Hole on side of trans tunnel?

Just got a 54 clipper deluxe 4 dr. On the drivers side of the trans tunnel I have a ole there. Kinda up front near the gas pedal. Just wondering if there was some sort of access panel to get to the side of the transmission from inside the car? Or just another hole in my floor? The car came without carpet and I'm in the process of filling in the holes in the floor. Just making sure this is one I can close up.
Thanks!

What plugs does my car take? Engine is a I8327. I read on another thread they take "308" plugs? But I don't think autozone will know what I'm talking about. Any help is appreciated!

Ok will check compression. What is an acceptable psi for these engines? I don't even know factory compression ratio for the 54 327?

Definitely am going I invest in plugs and condensor/points. Also, since the car is 12 volt now I prolly should get a decent coil that I know to be good.
Thanks for all the great info!

l makes sense.. i wil try adjusting the distributor via the slot there on the bottom with the screw....
for 87 octane should i advance or retard the timing? seemed like it was stumbling when advancing so i was going to try and retard the timing....

ill post results if/when i get it running good....

I have the bottom one. So I figured it would be something where it visibly adjusts itself. Where is the octane adjuster? The plugs look like they could use a change. New gas in it. But idk if the carb is gunked up. I did spray some carb cleaner in it. It might could use a rebuild....
