A precise amount is not important, just add enough to cover the gears, or to about 12mm below the bottom of the filler cap threads. I'd use a good grade of simple gear oil, and not motor oil.

thank you. understand that there is no specified number(how much) anywhere. what to pour good quality oil. I know it can not be larger class than GL-4 D-5 is too aggressive (but it's probably European grade)

I would think just about any GL-5 or similar gear lube will work. Here is the stuff Lucas makes, which I use.

Cheers,

Tom

I was on a long train of oil teacher said, gl-5 is aggressive on colored materials. such as bronze, phosphor bronze. if you have bushes, bearings made of these materials.check this . it is in Europe do not know how in the USA

You are right. GL-5 gear oil contains EP-additives (sulfo/phosphor) which are corrosive to bronze/copper.

I did not think the 120 gear box had any bronze. If so, I need to change the oil in our gear box!

THis topic of EP gear oil has always been a bit confusing to me. Is such EP gear oil not ever been used in Manual SYNCHRONIZED transmissions of nearly ALL makes and models of cars since at least 1955 thru present day????? SUCH transmissions with BRONZE synchro rings???

Dear Mirek:

You are absolutely right. Packard did not specify an EP oil for the steering box. You want to put 140w mineral oil which is available from the Lubriplate Oil Company USA.

The MIL-2105 specification (read USA Military) for gear oil specifies bronze compatibilty for gear oil, but it does react with copper.

Usually on Packards the bronze sector shaft bushing wears and the oil leaks out.

Hope this helps
