Hello everyone,
does any one know what the tube along the bottom of the intake manifold is called and what it's purpose is for?

Yes, there is a steel ball check valve at the base of the tube, retained by a cotter pin. Without such a valve you would be driving with a constant vacuum leak.

The tube was implemented with the introduction of downdraft carburetion in 1933 due to a concern for fuel flooding which was not a concern with the prior updraft carburetion. Intake manifold drains were continued on some engines up thru the WWII era.

Very simple to test if your valve is functioning. With the engine idling simply place your finger over the end of the tube; if you feel suction your valve is not functioning correctly.
