I don't think anybody can answer the date ranges, but can a 34 dated pan go on a 38. NO.. The 38 and 39 hood was shortened by moving the engine forward over the frame. The pan was redesigned with a depression to clear the frame. So was the oil pump.

Flackmaster, I was talking with the owner of a super nice '37 Twelve Convertible Sedan. Long story, but I remember first seeing the car in 1954. Anyway, in the conversation, the owner said that the car now has a '37 engine, replacing the '38 that was installed when he bought it. One difference that he noted between the two engines is for one year the dip stick is in front of the oil filler and in the back of the filler for the other year (I forget which is which). Don't recall if the dip stick is fitted to the block or sump.
